XGamer or SBLive! for my new card?

I'm looking at getting a new sound card since I have a piece of poop.

My preference right now would be the SBL, but would the XGamer be a formidable (sp?) option?

The only difference between the two is the bundled software, if I'm not mistaken.

Imho, there are better sound cards like the Santa Cruz, Hercules GameTheatre, and Philips Acoustic Edge.

possibly. But I don't have the kind of money to spend on those. My church has a sound card that costs a couple thousand, if I'm not mistaken. It's called something like "Tortise" or "Turtle" --something like that. It's a professional mixing card.

...anyway, either of those two are in my price range, once I start my job and get a little saved up.

XGamer is a Sblive, it just has 3d sound support and comes with games. Thats it. Exactly same as Sblive Value. Which is only $40.

I thought the Philips AE and Santa Cruz were only a little bit more than the XGamer.

But if you do want an SB Live!, I'd just get the value since the xgamer is the same thing with extra software.

The SBlive! 5.1 comes in many flavors, it depends on the software bundle and options packaged with it. The card itself is the same. If I have the money, I would consider the the Hercules Game Theatre. It has lower CPU utilization than the SBLive!, which used to be the low CPU use king.

Value cheaper than the X-Gamer??? I think it's the other way around. If I were you, I'd go for the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, not that much more...

<< Value cheaper than the X-Gamer??? I think it's the other way around. >>

dcdomain, you are getting mixed up yourself. 🙂

The Value is cheaper than the X-Gamer.

And fallengod - All of the SoundBlaster Live! cards have positional audio.

"All of the SoundBlaster Live! cards have positional audio."

If you want to call it that... The positional audio of the SBLive cards sucks compared to the competition.

thanks for all the imput, guys

I have a SB Live! Value. I'm very, VERY happy with how it performs. I was used to a Vibra 128 Legacy (has ANYONE ever heard of this p.o.s.!? ). The performance I get in games like UT, Q3, and Unreal is great! I have yet to try it with some other things.

I'm so used to settling for crap that when I get something decent, I'm happy with decent 'crap'

sblive and xgamer are one and the same thing...

all sblive versions are the same w/ different software bundles (and i think the xgamer doesn't have 5.1 digital out), and the platinum has the live drive...

basically, there's a ton of other better comparably priced cards out there...
the santa cruz is the best of them...it priced slightly more than a live value

1st gen sb live:
live
live value - live without the additional sdpif panel, fewer pins on the extension header, plastic jacks.

2nd gen sb live:
x-gamer
mp3+
platinum
DE/player 1024 for europe/asia
- based on 1st gen
- all are same card, different software bundle, platinum with livedrive.
- all have spdif out jack, gold plated jacks

3rd gen sb live:
x-gamer 5.1
mp3+ 5.1
platinum 5.1 - new livedrive with IR remote
DE 5.1
- based on 2nd gen
- spdif out jack become selective for analog 5/6 channels output

(some details I ommited)

oem card can be any one of the above with some modification.
first live value oem is live value without cd digital in, some have.
later so-called live value oem ver2 is like 2nd gen with plastic jacks instead of gold plated.
recently there is so-called 5.1 oem.
