might be old news but i wanted to point out that if XFX puts a dual slot cooler on their 4850 then i would pay any price to get it*

my point is: finally an 4850 with a decent cooler! there have been OC versions (Palit Sonic for instance) with better cooling but this could be cheaper and there will be 1GB versions etc etc read for yourselves.


*well not ANY price...
 
That's what the reference design for the HD 4850 should have looked like. Something that powerful and warm should have never been single slot/exhaust into the case.

I'm watching this one closely too. Still haven't gotten around to getting a mid-range video card with dual-slot cooler for my secondary/LAN rig, and the only thing that really fits the bill so far is the EVGA Akimbo 9800GT, or maybe one of the ASUS ROG 9800GTs.
 
Ha, there's already an XXX model of 4870 listed, 775MHz core, stock memory - 512MB though. Not to mention the cards have a black PCB and a black backplate with red DVI ports, looks very cool 🙂

You mean like this Asus 4850? "Glaciator" hsf and factory clocked to 680/2100, all for $135 after rebate.

Hard to tell for sure based on the currently available pics of the XFX, but it looks to me like it would do a better job of dumping heat out through the PCI bracket, instead of back into the case.

HIS makes some very nice dual slot 4850's as well.
 
is the dual slot cooler quieter too or only better for cooling.

i'm sick of cards that alternate between hair dryer (lo) to vacuum cleaner (hi). I don't know why people put up with this, shelling out 200, 300, $400 for a card that raises their stress level (and not in a good way). are they just deaf or are their cases full of noisy components they can't hear a thing? why don't reviewers harp on this more? if they insist on making me buy an after market cooler, then sell me an OEM card with no hsf like they do with CPU.

You just know that some noob is going to try to use the card with no cooler on it at all and end up RMAing after they fry the thing 😀.

At least in the case of cards that come with full-coverage waterblocks pre-installed, they're expensive enough that it should hopefully deter people who don't know what they're doing.

That HD4870 is stock with a fancy sticker though...

Also, the description of the HD4850 says single slot... most definitely not a single slot that dual slot cooling 😉

Look a little closer -- they picked a black PCB instead of the vanilla ATI-red 😉. I did some Googling of XFX's new ATI product line and I saw several people on various forums complaining about that. I wouldn't really mind though -- my 4870 is the only thing inside my case that isn't black 😀.

That sticks out nicely then 🙂 All black would be cool also, I guess 😉 Anyway, I was referring to the cooling unit, the PCB is obviously black (ie. non standard) and the DVI ports look awesome too 🙂

I got a light blue mobo (GA), red and now dark gray Radeon (TT cooling), dark green-black X-Fi and a silver TRUE with black and white Nexus fans all over... looks like a kid's drawing book 😛
