XFX GTX 260 BE or Evga GTX 260 SSC

EVGA GeForce GTX 260. The XFX card is the "old" 65nm version, while the EVGA SSC is the 55nm version. Nothing wrong with the 65nm version, but I'd opt for the smaller process core if given the choice. There's a reason the XFX is a bit cheaper.

Don't the 65nm versions OC better due to better components and better coolers? I'd get whichever is cheaper but if at equal price I'd go with the XFX since there would be a higher resale value due to the double lifetime warranty.

Yes, from what I know the 65 nm card has the volterra chip on it, where the 55 nm cheaper version, doesn't. So that would allow you to software increase your voltage and obtain very good overclocking numbers. But that, only if the OP is willing to volt mod and do some serious overclocking, otherwise, I'd choose the newer EVGA card.

My XFX crashes under heavy load ( several transparency layers over eachother). Have to downclock it to 600 MHz to stop it from doing that. That may also have something to do with my PSU but I have no way to check that. Don't want to give the XFX a bad name but you may add this to your user input list 🙂

Maybe XFX overclocked the card too much, without testing it as they should have. I've seen this issue at some partners, that sell oced videocards. Why it happens, I really don't know. This is why I prefer to buy a stock card and overclock it myself.

They tested it allright but under what conditions? You can jump around in heavy scenes in crysis without any trouble but walk down into heavy fog scenes and the screen turns blank. It happens only during certain scenes in crysis.

They should have tested it in FSX. Just load up a bit of bad weather and of it goes 🙂

I believe that quite every performance videocard on the market makes that sound.

Or just Nvidia cards. I've had this happen on my 8800gts. It only happens when you the video card is too fast or something.

Both 4870 cards I had, did the same squealing sound and that, not only under heavy load. It can also do it when I'm watching movies. So,it's a general situation.

You heard wrong. There might be a slight possibility that some manufacturers use better coils on the card, but I highly doubt it. The squeal is there in a form or another, on power hungry cards.

Hehe, nice. I've only heard squealing on two cards I've ever owned.

7900GTX and a 2900XT. Loud squealing on both. Very annoying. But you'd have to play your games or watch movies without sound to hear it. So, not a deciding factor for purchase. IMHO.

For movies? That would suck. I would return it in a heart beat if my brand new video card did that.

did you ramp up your fan higher to 60 - or 70% ? and does it still do it?

Of course that it's not that loud in movies, but it's audible and mostly because the fan doesn't speed up.
It's pretty loud in games though, especially now after upping the vgpu a bit. But, with the fan at 45%, I hear it more then the squeal. Add the fans on my Antec on high and the other "squeal" coming from the voltage regulators on the mobo and I have a great loud orchestra, when gaming.
