This may be the first time in a long time where the stock cooler of the GTX480 will be superior to most aftermarket coolers :) (Zalman we are looking at you).

Good looking cards, but I don't envy anyone whose waiting for them.

Between the Phoenix cooler on the 5xxx series and these cards now, I'd say this was a quite attractive round of video cards

Yeah it does look nice, I assume the high TDP required them to carefully look at their fan/heatpipe design. It'll be interesting to see how much sound they make too as that'll affect my card choice...

480 does look rather sexy......

Pictures are NOT what I want to see though.

The 480 is a very nice looking card. Something about the 470 looks lame to me though.. not sure what exactly.

Cheap? That's what I think when comparing it to 480. Consider GPU cost, then look at 470's pcb/components/cooler in comparision to 480's. It seems clear that nV worked hard to fit 470 into it's price bracket.

I'm not saying it won't do the job, but damn, that's a cheap ass looking card IMO. :)

About like the difference between a 5870 and 5850 IMO. Same basic look from a distance, but not as refined:

In looking at the pictures of the GTX 480, it makes me wonder if the exposed metal part on top of the shroud is actually part of the sink itself and not just a metal accent on the shroud. Basically, does the shroud only surround the part that meets the back plane and the the fan, while leaving the actual sink exposed?

How does the GTX470 compare to the 5870? About the same or more or less...

They're most likely heatpipes.

Um, yeah... I'm not talking about the pipes that are obviously heatpipes...

I'm talking about the whole front of the card. That big thing that appears to be metal between the fan and the backplane. Is that just a metal looking veneer on a plastic shroud, or is that the metal top of the actual heatsink?

Tiny heatsinks possibly. Any thing they can do to increase the surface area to cool the 295 watt(allegedly) behemoth. The 470 doesn't look anywhere near as cool looking. I think I will be better off gettting 2 470's over 2 480's though. Those will be hot enough for my little case.

after seeing how they've treated me with this 4890 I bought, I'm never buying XFX again.

Bought from Tiger Direct, contacted them about why my 3dmark vantage score was only 8200, which is exactly the score of my 4850 OC'd to 690/1100.

They came back with "if I understand correctly you are having problems with your product?" and then later,
"Please contact us again if you have any further inquiries."
They cleverly didn't notify me by email of the latter response (about contacting them again), even though the previous responses did, and I told them to email me every time I got a ticket response.
Tricky dirty bastards.
