XFX Discontinues Double Lifetime Warranty with New Radeon Graphics Cards

With the introduction of its Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards, XFX silently discontinued its famous "double-lifetime" product warranty policy, which made XFX graphics cards a worthy buy for overclockers. This warranty policy also added to the resale value of these cards. It allowed buyers to tamper with the supplied cooling solution (heatsink), by replacing them with their own without voiding warranty, it even gave lifetime warranty coverage to the original buyer, as well as to the person buying the product pre-used from an original buyer.

XFX told HardwareCanucks that their Double Lifetime warranty just wasn't sustainable and so they decided against offering it on HD 7900-series cards. This is what the warranty policies of XFX' HD 7900 graphics cards look like:

• Cards with Double Dissipation (Double D) or whose product number ends in "R" get Lifetime warranty if registered within 30 days.
• All other cards (ex: HD 7970 Core Edition; FX797ATNFC) get 2 Year Warranty

Honestly, not really a shocker. They are among one of the last retailers to still offer a lifetime warranty at all, let alone for 2 users. I could see that coming from a mile away. Im just surprised they still offer a lifetime warranty at all.

Im sure they dish out among the highest costs in RMA's of all video card retailers because of the lifetime warranty.

For 7970s, Visiontek offers lifetime and Diamond offers a 5-year term length.

i found this out the hard way. i specifically ordered my radeons as XFX because on the product page i was looking at, it still said LIFETIME WARRANTY on it. i go back a few days later, and now it says 2 years.

I never keep gpu's over a year or two at most so it really doesn't make a hill of beans to me. I want AMD, Nvidia and all their partners to make a profit so they'll have reason to sell me shiny new gpu's. If cutting out the lifetime warranty has to be done than so be it.

The Double Lifetime warranty is what is really key here. You used to be able to transfer the warranty to the buyer when selling your card. This made it really easy to sell XFX cards for a higher price than most. Of course, you also paid a bit of a premium when you bought a new XFX card.

Meh it doesn't shock me i heard bad things about XFX.

My last xfx was a 6790 that was such a piece of crap i couldn't watch a dvd without my computer locking up 4+ times during one film...the last card i will purchase from them.

Maybe a bad batch but newegg reviews don't lie....

Yup the single fan xfx 6790 on newegg at one point had more one 1 egg reviews then 5 egg reviews and the biggest complaint was system freezing during the most simple of things like watching films and playing mini games.

The 6750 before it gave me no fuss and a system i had last year that i sold had crossfire 5770 cards that never presented this problem just that the 6790 xfx manufactured and sold just had this freezing issue that was relentless.
