Here is the 8800GT 256MB review by Legit Reviews.

Seems that all of the newer 8800GTs will use a new and revised cooling solution.

Hmm, interesting review.

8800gt 256mb doesn't seem to steamroll the 3850 like it did on the two other reviews that I've seen.

The 3850 took Stalker, Call of Juarez, CoD4 at high resolution and Crysis at 1280x1024, while the 8800gt 256 took Bioshock, Crysis at 1600x1200 and CoD4 at low resolution.

I wish AT would put up a damned 8800gt 256 review.

Contrasts some other reviews I've seen just like blehman84 said. I'll wait for anandtech, and some others to do more benchmarking before making a decision.

Guys, our review was done on Vista Ultimate 64-bit and a 45nm Yorkfield processor with 4GB of memory... not many other reviewers are using that as a test system. Just thought I would point that out.

that's a valid point about the test system. That is certainly NOT representative of a HUGE majority of systems today, but in 15-18 mos it will be midrange. How many people buying midrange cards upgrade more often than 15-18 mos? I think that it's usually more like 2-3 years for their upgrade cycle, possibly even more now that we don't have the agp-pci express forced-upgrade situation hanging over people's heads. This simply highlights what we've all seen for a while now: nvidia leads upon release but ati gradually catches up over time. I still think that the 8800gt 256 is going to be a great card, and most likely better than 3850 overall for the typical lifetime of it, but it's not quite as clear-cut as many would have us believe.

I'm wondering why they don't have 8800GTs in SLI as well; the 3870s in Crossfire are conspicuously always on the top of the benchmark in nearly every game in that review.

they tested all of the cards on an X38 mobo. maybe once 780i comes out we'll see some good sli benchmarks, too. Until then it's a tough choice for the enthusiast between a better mobo vs a mobo with sli. I'm not saying that won't still be the case, but right now you can't even have an intelligent conversation when comparing 680i with x38.
