xfx 8600gts problems

Hey everyone, I have a dell e520 and just last night dropped in an XFX 8600gts xxx. The video driver fails every so often in games.

The machine runs Aero just fine and works with WoW perfectly (frames will be at 60fps with details maxed at 1680x1050) except for the occasional video driver failure. The failure causes the screen to black out for about 2-3 secs and then everything comes back with a warning in the system tool tray (appears as an exclamation mark). When I look at the event log for the failure, it says the problem event name is 'LiveKernelEvent' and has the following extra information:

I googled this error and could only find speculation to the problem, with no real answers. Could this be that I'm using the stock 305watt dell PSU? Is the video card dead on arrival? I'm kinda stuck here. WoW and the system were previously stable on integrated video.

$220 and it came with a free copy of supreme commander. I know the 8800gts is a better deal, but this case only fits single slot cards so I had the mid range dx10 in mind.

first try the new drivers from the nvidia website, if that won't work it could be your PSU

I tried the latest nvidia forceware drivers but no dice. I'm really hoping it's the power supply. Not sure about power supply specs (as im at work atm) other then its a 305watt psu

I doubt the PSU is enough! and dont know how you can replace a Dell PSU

Edit, how about 1 of those external ThermalTake PSU's as an additional PS for the card?

I havent checked under the hood in my case very much yet, but apparently dell PSUs are no longer proprietary and can be replaced with aftermarket parts. Thanks for the tip on the external PSU, i'll look into that as well 🙂

E520 is a low-power system. 8600GTS is not a power monster. Dell power supplies are known to solidly deliver their rated power. I doubt it's the PSU.

You already have Intel integrated graphics on that system before putting in the videocard.

Did you de-activate onboard graphics in the BIOS?
Did you remove the onboard graphics driver ?
Did you clean everything with DriverCleaner?
Did you then install the new Nvidia driver?

BTW, what happened to the free version of Driver Cleaner?
