If you are a moderate gamer, have a system with limited power supply, and are trying to push no more than a 1280x1024 resolution, the 8600GT can be a good choice, provided you don't pay too much.

There are tons of reviews out there for this card. You can start Here

A 8600GT is more than enough for 1024x768. There is nothing special about XFX 8600GT cards. They have various models that differ only in their level of overclock. Also, XFX doesn't use the reference 8600GT cooler from NVidia but another design that looks like the cooler on the older 7600GT.

All I can say is buy it  or if you prefer the reference cooler (like I do), get a 8600GT from EVGA. In any case, you can't really go wrong if the price is right.

And I agree with you it's not worth paying more for an overclocked model.

I just picked up the XFX 8600GT to run 2 30" monitors (*NOT* for gaming -- I do application development).

I like it so far.

The dual dual-link outputs are nice and handle both monitors, the card is reasonably small, and it displays just fine so far for my use. I should stress I haven't even tried to game on it though (not even once), and I doubt it'd handle 2560x1600 gaming at all. Nonetheless, for my purposes and at a price of $104 (NewEgg), I thought it was a good buy.

I picked one up for a friend. Got it for 108$ CDN. She is mainly going to need something for Vista and some Solidworks 2008. I know it's not the best choice for that but it should do much better than the spare 7300GS I was originally gonna put in the computer.

If you just do basic gaming and regular usage it should be fine. Make sure you get a bargain on it though. Otherwise, there are better choices.

well,

1950 pro and 7950 gt , i believe they dont have dx-10 support( correct me if i am wrong). so if u are looking for present games, then u can get it for now.. but future will be terrible.

is there a lot of performance difference between xfx models? 1). 1.1ghz and 2). 1.4ghz?

so i can get this xfx? if i am gona play all my games on 17", with (1024 x 768)? or a little higher if monitor supports.

Have a look on their web site, and look at their clocks:

http://www.xfxforce.com/web/home.jspa

Default clocks of the 8600GT are 540 core and 700 (or 1400, depending on the way you count) for memory. Anything above that is overclocked.

So a 10 % OC is a big deal marketing-wise, but will not always give 10 % performance increase. And is not something to wory about @ 1024x768. But then, if you can get an OC model for about the same money as a reference model, why not go for it?

Could you post a link to the exact card you want to buy?

this is the one i am looking at, and its model number is - PV-T84J-UDF3.

http://www.xfxforce.com/web/pr...onfigurationId=1062920

i was goiong through a nother product number - PV-T84J-UDD3. the link for this is
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150229

Will there be a big difference between these 2?

i am not sure which model is available in my place wr i live.

so if i get any one of them its cool right?

and what if the PV-T84J-UDF3 model is available.. will it be bad buy compared to PV-T84J-UDD3?

The PV-T84J-UDF3 has the 540/1400 default clocks. The PV-T84J-UDD3 is overclocked @ 620/1600 according to the Specifications tab on Newegg. So this latest card will be somewhat faster but could also run a bit hotter. Not a bad deal at $119. The UDF3 is not "bad", it is simply a reference model. It all depends on the price you pay for the performance you get. Any of these cards is enough for 1024x768.
