XFX 7800GT Fan Not Needed?

So, I've just finished building my new budget dream system which is damn quiet, and I look at new XFX card and notice that the fan only runs intermittently unless the card is under a heavy graphics load. This is new territory for me as I have never seen a top of the line card not need constant cooling from a fan for some time now. The GPU is currently running about 76-77 deg C when not loaded and up around 80 or so after constant loading. Am I the only one who has noticed this? Is this a flaw? Or is it some amazing new cooling system that I was unaware existed?

it is a very bad idea no matter what to remove the gpu fan, I wouldnt
recommend it.
How can tell when one day you card just gets a little overheated and
bam you loose it,
Not a chance you should be taking considering the price of that sucker.
As for it not running, never noticed that even though I have the card myself.

Where did he say he wanted to take the fan off?

Yeah, I'm not planning on removing the HSF, but I want to know if this thing is actually supposed to only run as it heats up or if mine is the only one acting like this. Its the newer version of the card with the black heat sink and the light up panel on the side that glows xfx in green.

My EVGA fan is slower when I'm just doing 2D stuff. I don't think it turns off though, but I guess I never checked. It does say it's 52 degrees C.

from what I understand, the 7800GTX has a built in fan control, while the 7800GT does not.

Under no condition would I ever run a 7800 with a fan not spinning - I would consider it defective. 76 is way too high idling

I dont know what drivers you are using (hopefully in the 80's), but notice the fan always on checkbox in the overclocking tab

this implies the fan COULD be off, even so, your temps indicate SOMETHING is wrong, you should be in 40's.

Edit: You might want to install Rivatuner and get a lot more options

I haven't gotten confirmation from eVGA myself, but I think their 7800GTs have PWM fans just like the 7800GTXs. My bro. has a 7800GTX and it is whipser quiet until he starts doing something that requires more graphics processing. A little bit after he's done doing whatever it was that required the heavier graphics processing, the fan becomes very quiet again. I have an eVGA 7800GT and noticed the same behavior. I haven't seen this behavior in any other 7800GT though.
