xfx 7800 gt pauses?

I never epxerienced this with my evga 6800, but this new card I got does double my performance but does this very annoying thing. Like when graphics are intense all the motion will be smooth for 2 seconds and then pause for a split second and then got smooth again. If I lower graphics it doesn't do this. What's going on?

How much ram do you have? What game are you playing? What settings are you playing at? What does the rest of your rig look like? We need a little more info before we can be of any help.

any new game. far cry for example. it jerks, but playable. don't like the jerking.

3200+ amd 64
ep-9npa+ultra which I am beginning to think is junk.
