XFX 6800 concerns

Just received my xfx 6800 and its up and running...however, the performance isn't quite what I expected. Specs: 2.4ghz p4, 533mhz bus, 756mb pc2700 ram, 4x agp.

Far cry performance isn't near what I've read benchmarks of, and the most disconcerting part - the "clear sailing" demo, made for the 6800, chugs along at about 1 frame every 2 seconds. I'm off to do some overclocking, but I'm not holding my breath.

Am I expecting too much?

I guess the primary question here: are the nvidia demos, such as "clear sailing", that say they are meant for the 6800, actually meant for it, or for 6800gt?

I guess the worst thing is that this demo runs in 800x600 and looks none too impressive. Why wont my shiny new video card run it...

this just in: turning farcry settings to high not only makes the game run at 1 fps but gives me lots of neat artifacting. hurray.

the bottleneck is your 533 fsb 2.4b processor and pc 2700 memory, get a better cpu and you'll see performance

Something is wrong here besides your VC not being powerful enough.
I can play FarCry on 1024x768 and medium settings on a Radeon 9700/XP 1800+ with no issues.

Try updating your chipset and VC drivers. Can make a world of difference.

The truly odd thing is the problems going from medium to high...medium runs 40fps...high does about 1fps, gives me artifacting, and problems typing in the console...press a key and it runs across the screen....

Did you download the latest Forceware drivers and the latest Far Cry patch?
I never had any framerate issues, even on highest with that same card, but I did have a really ugly texture problem where the ground and water would look black. The developers of Far Cry released a patch for it to fix the problem.

I"ve got forceware 77.77 and farcry 1.337. Farcry is on very high settings, and when i load up the game i get 0.7fps. it can sit there as long as it wants and it never budges from 0.7fps. however, if i alt+tab out and then back, it restores with some artifacting, but then runs at a consistent 30fps.

Wha?

I dont know about the FOS, but turning the detail to high should not result in artifacting, even if it is running 1fps.

Sounds like a driver issue to me. Use driver cleaner and reinstall latest drivers.

Hmmm. I just got my xfx 6800 today. I was able to unlock to 16/6 and overclock to 350/800 on stock cooling. With a s754 a64 3000 paired with 1gb value ddr400 ; I was able to get as high as 50 fps on Far Cry. My settings were 1280*1024, Veryhigh, Ultra water. FC is patched to 64bit 1.32 on x64 Xp pro.
MY system is not too far in specs from yours, are you running the game in sm 3.0 path? And what drivers are you using?

My guess would be that everything on your sys except for the gfx card suxors. Especially the AGP 4x. I had an AGP 4x, with P4 2.0 and 1gb 266ram, and upgraded to p4 3.2, 8x, and 2gb 400ram and saw a 5fold (at least) increase without changing the gfx card. (on my secondary compy)

what about other games?

I had a similar issue when my BFG 6800 Ultra was dying. I had to under-clock it for it to run correctly in most games until BF2 came out which just destroyed it... replaced it, and things are back to near-perfection.

Artifacting is bad news. If this happens in all games, this could also be a mobo issue... you didn't mention if it's a via board or an intel board. You sure you updated your AGP drivers?

im running an almost identical system except i have a 2.53ghz northwood... i get at least 45 FPS in far cry at 1028*1024 with highest settings

agp 4x shouldnt make a difference in your performance

short of reformatting, I'd try this:

remove vid card drivers
use driver cleaner
reinstall the intel inf package
reinstall directx
reinstall vid card drivers

strangely enough crizzar, thats what i did just before i read your post.

i just reinstalled the intel inf package before the rest of them. i also changed my agp aperture setting to 256mb. i also didn't reinstall directx. I didn't even know that was possible. Anyway, the clear sailing demo is running smoother and farcry is at about 36fps on low AA and very high everything else. I'm gonna keep messing with it.
