I heard the 6600GT and 6800 fans are very noisy and the fan bearing is defective it wears out in a short amount of time. I read on the XFX forum that people just e-mail XFX support and they send them a new fan, but they have to ship the old one back.

anybody experience these problems?

this is what the fan looks like Fan

A better option would be to pick up a passively cooled 6600 GT. Gigabyte and Asus make such cards.

I have a XFX 6600GT and yes the fan is noisy. The reason it is noisy is that it runs at 100% all the time. However, it is easy to solve. Just download Gainward's Expertool here. That allows you to set the fan speeds to whatever you want. At 80%, the fans are very quiet. Yes, it is an XFX card and I am using Gainward's utility, but it works just fine.

The other thing of concern is that my heatsink was not seated very well. Temperatures at idle were in the 60s and at load shot up into the 90s. I reseated the heatsink and idle is now in the 40s with load in the 60s. It is interesting to note that this is not just an XFX problem. Other vendors seem to have it too. Maybe the heatsinks get jostled in shipping; I do not know. Again, it is easy to solve. Here is a link to the article about Gainward's problem with it.
