XFX 5850 Crashing

I just bought a brand new XFX 5850 in September of 2010 and for a month or two it worked fine. All of a sudden my computer started crashing to a green or grey screen with pinstripes and then i have to restart or just turn off my computer. This occurs not only when I try to play games but also when i try to surf the net. I have tried several different Drivers including 10.8, 10.12, and 10.11. Every time i try one i uninstall EVERYTHING completely and then install the new drivers and it still does not fix it. I had it working for about a week but then after that it's gone back to crashing again. If anyone has any ideas on what i can do to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. I installed the card correctly and it has not been damaged. I have a 550W BFG PSU as well, if that helps.

Thanks for any help

Do you have a Gigabyte motherboard?

Google "grey screen 5850" and you'll find a LOT of people with issues. The updated drivers should have sorted it out for cards that were affected due to software.

However, if the drivers didn't fix it, the card may just be defective. Another note is that most people who were having issues apaprently had Gigabyte motherboards. Updating the mobo BIOS may help then (at your own risk).

My 5770 did the same thing, and I just finished sending it in for an RMA; they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I just sold it Saturday on Craigslist. The new 6850 I put in has been flawless for almost 3 weeks now.

The motherboard is an asus branded motherboard. The cpu is a 3.2 ghz quad core black and i am running windows seven 64bit.

Can you list your system specs? The most common cause that we have seen recently, especially with new builds, is misconfigured or defective memory. Most DDR3 out right now runs at 1.65V since it is for P55 and X58 but most motherboards boot at 1.5V. Make sure that your memory voltage is set to the proper voltage. I would recommend updating your BIOS. It has helped for a lot of customers. Make sure that you follow ASUS' instructions to do it properly. That crash is basically just a way that the display driver can crash but it can be caused by any instability in the system. Memory is the most common.

If you have an online support ticket on our site then please PM me the ticket ID so that I can look it over.

PC specs are as follows

Windows 7 64 bit
ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard
8 gigs of DDR3 Adata 1600
XFX 5850
AMD Phenom II X4 955 black edition 3.2 ghz

I just set my memory voltage from auto to 1.66V so i will see if that helps anything.

Thanks for the help so far!

I have been using the computer for about an hour now and it seems to be working fine. Usually after about five minutes it would crash but so far it is perfect. If something else goes wrong ill be sure to let you all know.

Thanks for everyones help!

Good to see XFX Support assisting forum users. There were unfortunately a number of forum participants who purchased XFX HD5850s last week and immediately had trouble. The reviews on Newegg would suggest they were not the only ones.

I myself have intermittently had trouble with my reference XFX HD5850. Following on the advice from XFX posted above, I've just adjusted the timings on my DDR3 memory to see if that could have been causing the display corruption (pink lines) that I have occasionally experienced.

If the problem persists, try Catalyst 10.09 drivers.

I have the exact same problem, but I'm using a Sapphire 5870. There may be a bug introduced in 10.10+. I RMA'd my card and the replacement card had the same problems, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the card. I haven't had an issue since using 10.09.

Edit: I know you said you tried 10.08 drivers, but still give 10.09 a try is the problem crops up again. I'd like to know if this fixes issues like this for anyone else.

I too had problems with my XFX HD5850 unfortunately. Ever since I installed mine the system rebooted itself 3-4 times. Windows error report says that it was due to the graphic card. I left my card at stock settings of 725MHz 1000Mhz memory.

When I play games the graphics can get unstable at times. I see warping (hard to describe, it's like when you have a different problem running in the background that tries to goes to the foreground)

I happens when I play StarCraft 2, Mass Effect2. I didn't notice anything when I watch Hulu or Youtube.

Should've gone for the 6850 🙁

Interesting, I've had this too. Lately, every match of BC2 I play is interrupted at least once by my desktop or a background program (like afterburner) switching to the front. It's like I hit the task-switch button, but I didn't actually hit it. I thought it might be a result of the newest drivers, since I never had this problem before last month.

I meant to say a different *program*

But yeah, I happen to be running Afterburner too (I want to make sure my fan is running and I want to monitor the temp)

I'm thinking of going to 10.10 catalyst and see what happens.
