xfire 7870 or 7970 for 2560x1440

As the title explains, I'm going to be getting a 2560x1440 monitor in the near future, and I have a 7870, so I was wondering if it would be worth it to sell the 7870 and get a 7970, or get another 7870 for xfire to play games
edit: let's assume at this point I have a 3570k and z77 board, not sure why I have to mention this seeing as it's under video cards and graphics

you already have a thread about this where you were told that cpu and mobo would need to be upgraded.
 
agreed with the CPU comment, I would get an i5 at least.
 
I would go with the k series if you like to OC, the 3470 wont be unlocked :C

Also, I would go for the 7970 or 7950 for your res, that way if it isn't enough for some games, you can get another one later 😀

With that said, both the 79xx and 78xx series oc quite well.

He's got an H77 board, a K series CPU will do him no good 😛 You know you have to upgrade that board too, OP?
 
lol you guys are missing the point, just pretend I have a z77 board and a 3570k. which GPU would be better, xfire 7870s or a 7970 for gaming

Crossfire 7870s would have more raw power, with 2560 shaders vs. the 7970's 2048, and twice the amount of geometry engines and ROPs. However, Crossfire comes with unique issues of its own; it's not guaranteed to work in all games and there has been some debate as to the smoothness of it. I personally would go for the 7970 GHz Edition.

thank you, i'll probably sell my 7870 and get one, however, is the ghz edition worth it? I can overclock it myself if the only difference is in speed
 
I have two Korean Achieva ShiMians, each at 2560x1440, paired with an i5 2400 Sandy and a single 7950B 3GB@stock clocks. It handles pretty much every game I throw at it without issue. Even games modded with 2k texture packs and other mods don't seem to really give it any trouble.

I'd tend to go with a single card over SLI or Crossfire personally, multi card solutions seem to have much high instances of driver and game compatibility problems. Plus they suck much more power and generate much more heat, without providing much of a performance advantage. Most of the numbers I've seen have a single 7970 edging out xFire 7870s in a lot of tests, while using less power and generating less heat.
