Hi guys i added XFCE4 to Linux mint 14 mate and is totally different from mate, can you guys tell me what do i gain from this change?
so far there are some buttons missing like power off ap,
if i want to return to mint 14 mate desktop how i go about it ?, thanks

XFCE is just a different way of doing things...

I like MATE and XFCE.

If you log out, you can change the option to boot in to MATE. XFCE and MATE can coexist...

I'd be curious to see a comparison of the RAM usage between the two DE's, while you've got them both installed.

Mate is probably nicer right now, but I think Xfce has better staying power. The reason I don't use Mate is because I don't think it will last. It'll slowly become incompatible with the rest of the ecosystem, and the devs don't have have the coding chops to keep up. That's why I use Xfce.

It's your call as to which you like better.

Supposedly XFCE is lighter than MATE I believe. I used it for about a month but it is just a little too lacking in the polish department for me. Just because I am using Linux doesn't mean I need a spartan looking desktop. I also could never get power management working worth a darn when running XFCE which was a deal killer.

I agree.

But I'm hoping that is where Cinnamon comes in.

Right now, I'm running MATE as my base because I've found it the most stable. I have Cinnamon and XFCE to play around in as well when I get bored.

I do agree that XFCE is a nice solid choice... It is a bit more difficult to set up and tweak, but it also isn't going anywhere any time soon...

Thanks Lxskllr: can i still use Xfce4 and have this desktop display like it shows on this video? forgive me if I'm to lame on this matter ,thanks

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. It can be setup to look like that, but may not be just by installing Xfce. I'm sure Mint uses particular defaults on the .iso you wouldn't get by installing the package. Is there anything you want specifically you're having problems with?

If I understand you right, the Mint menu search isn't searching the web using your term? I'm not familiar with Mint's search, but I would consider that undesirable behavior if it were so. That's a feature :^P

On the Firefox search box, use the dropdown menu to select a different search provider. I like DuckDuckGo. It looks like they don't give you Google by default, so you'll have to install it by clicking the "manage search engines" options in the dropdown box. If you insist on Google, I'd recommend StartPage as an alternative. It uses Google search without the tracking.

For searching from the address bar, see this page...

This is my search string...

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=!+

This searches DuckDuckGo using the I'm feeling Ducky protocol. IOW same as Google's I'm feeling lucky. You get a page, and hopefully it's good :^D

Hi guys i had added XFCE6 and Goduckduck web browser to my linux mint mate 14 some time ago and today something happened that my display card lost its configurations so i could watch full 1920x1080 on the monitor but blank on my hd tv and there was no settings for me to change things.
So i dicided to make new linuxmintmate14 install, now i have everything fine now besides the mozila fire fox was acting wierd with goduckduck browser,
and i have to say mint14 mate is alot more friendly. From now on no more changes i think linux minte mate14 is one of the best Distros.
