Xeon X3220

Ok..I ran out of smarts on this one..Question..can this cpu be used in a windows environment..like win XP ? I noticed that in Q3 this cpu will go for around US $266, it is quad core and socket lga775. This cpu is flogged as a server unit..so that is the reason for my question since I will be buying a dual or quad cpu soon for a gameing sys.

allright..thanks for your reply. I have mucked around some and found out that the Xeon 3000 series processors can be used on mobos that support the kentsfield cpu. Would it be a smart move to go with a reduced price Xeon..over a kentsfield..if a guy was just going to build a gameing rig and put some longivity and horsepower into it..not knowing what else was comeing down the road in the next few years ?

there are rumors that intel will elease a qx6400 in q3 for like $200 in q3. i think the qx6600 is going to $250 then anyway.

The X3210 is actually a server-grade version of the Q6400 (And they are not coming out with a QX6400 or a QX6600, just a Q6400 and Q6600, QX is Extreme Quadcore, of which they are coming out with a $1000 QX6800). The X3210 is probably a little better than it's consumer-grade cousin, the Q6400, because it is meant for a 24/7 server load. It means it will probably be more resilient in overclocking. If you want to run an OCed 24/7 rig, i would suggest a Xeon X3000 series over a Kentsfield.

Guys,
Thanks for your very informative replies..I like machine parts that run well and last a long time..heh..note my present gear. It is getting long in the tooth..but still running nicely. Not doing a bad job in Stalker either. So..looks like a Xeon part is in the cards for me then come the Q3 price cuts. I have plenty of time to read these forums and identify the rest of my next sys. Thanks again men.
