Xeon Question

A teacher at my school has a business that works with Dell, and he told me he can get me a Precision workstation for cheap(er) via corporate discounts and whatnot. One of the high-end Dell workstations uses Dual Core Xeon processors. I know this may be overkill, since I'm essentially using my computer for basic student stuff (downloading, music, games, basic multitasking).

My question is: I'm using this computer as an upgrade for my current Northwood P4 2.4 build. How does the Dual Core Xeon compare to a Core 2 Duo in respect to gaming?

Or is it just different processors for different types of use.

Thank you. All help is appreciated.

Let's just say its the workstation version of the Core 2 Duo... (If you are talking about the Woodcrest)

so will it be better or worse in the aspects I was talking about. Will a Dual Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5050 3.00GHz, 2 X 2MB L2, 667 perform better than, suppose a E6600 or a E6700, in gaming, multitasking, etc. I'm going to be using a high end graphics card with this build also.

I think it'll probably be on par, if not, better than than those processors since its made for servers and stuff.

No problem! Just pray that your teacher brings that computer to school for you to play with! 😀

netburst is the name of the architectures name.Dempsey is the chips code name.If u are buying a xeon make sure it's woodcrest as xeon 51xx or higher. That would be similar to core 2 duos(desktop).

A Xeon 5050 should not be on your shopping list for a games PC.

However any Xeon 51xx processor would be fine, although once everything is accounted for it will most likely be more expensive than a Core 2 Duo setup.

i dunno...alot has changed with Core 2. It may be different now.

find out what kind of xeons it has. as said before Xeon 51XX = Very good processors, Xeon 50XX = old netburst. A 2 GHZ 51XX > 3.6 GHZ 50XX.
