Xeon or Consumer grade CPU for a media machine.

I don't have the money right now but soon. I've always used gaming based mobo's, cpu's, memory, video cards (obviously) for all my machines. My next rig is going to be a high end machine, but I don't game much anymore.

Main purpose of my next machine is to double as a HTPC and for video editing/creating/encoding/converting.... Maybe some gaming on the side. Will I see any benefit of building a machine using Xeon cpu's, ECC memory, business/server based mobo's than with a standard gaming build?

Assuming equal number of cores from Xeon vs i7 vs Opteron vs FX what is going to give me the best bang?
 
He did mention bang/back. Even if support ecc memory doesn't matter because it has no benefit in this case, the xeons are cheaper than i7s.
 
Xeons over i7 if you're not overclocking and don't need the integrated graphics.

I've always found XEON Processors to be significantly cheaper than i7s. It'll go nicely in a media setup. With that said, it's worth considering the possibility of you one day getting back into some forms of gaming.
 
Assuming no OC than Xeons looks like the way to go, by saving some $$$. However, if I want to OC, than an i7.

If you want ECC, it's cheaper to find an AM3+ board supporting it, than C226 board.

ECC is about preventing rare occasional silent errors, which can typically be detected on all data storage devices and data paths but your DRAM. Whether it would be valuable to you, and by how much, is the real question. Today, you must lose some combination of performance (FX CPU), performance per Watt (FX CPU and your power bill), or performance per dollar (paying Intel for that C226 chipset).

I'd love it if RAM were the only added cost, but not for $120+ more to get a comparable ECC-supporting mobo (I did get a Xeon).
