XEON Nocona 3.0GHz passive Heatsink

Guys,

I have bought 2 XEON Nocona 3.0 GHz without Active FAN (comes with Intel Box with passive heatsink) I also bought SuperMicro mainboard X6DA8-G2 and SuperMicro SC742i-450 chassis. I think I made a mistake when I was bought that XEON only with passive heatsink. I need your comment about this? should I change the passive heatsink to active one?

If the passive heatsink came stock from Intel, I'd say you don't have to worry. I don't imagine a company like Intel would just go ahead and package it with only a hs if they weren't confident that it would not cause problems. I'd actually be happy because it is less noise but you can be assured it will most likely be safe.

If it isn't Intel's package that included the heatsink, then I might be somewhat concerned.

EDIT: I forgot to mention another idea. I'm not 100% sure but I thought all Intel cpus automatically shutdown before overheating. Or was that just for p4's? You can find out for the Xeons, but I believe most good mobo's also have the temperature check that shuts down when it gets too high.

You could just try to run it under stress and see how the temps are and see if the comp restarts/shuts down. Then you can make the decision to buy a hsf.

Thanks for your comment, yes you're right, the hs came stock from Intel. I will check if this mobo have the temperature control.

I'm guessing they are passive for use in a 1U chassis. Normally you would have blowers and ducts over them then instead of a fan on top.
