Xeon MP question.

From what I've saw at Intel, it looks like the 1.6 GHz 4/8 processor Xeon MP will be shipped with 1MB L3 cache only. Is that correct - or will Intel sell 512kB cache versions of that processor? That would kind of suck for those of us who don't need that much and would like to keep the fastest speed at a reasonable cost.

The price is quite reasonable, at IBM and I'm sure when the other manufacturers get around to selling them they will all beat IBM's price.

No one? Oh well, time will tell if Intel will release a lower cached version.

Edit: Hmm 19 posts on a processor with a 4% speed bump. Zero posts on completely new processor. 😛 It is to be expected though since most will never use the Xeon MP.

I looked at articles on eetimes and cnet and I beleive you are correct. The Xeon MP 1.6 GHz only ships with 1 MB of on-die L3.

But what about future processors? The P3 server Xeons had a wide variety of caches. Will these be stuck at one level?
