XEON-L5639 overclocking problem on a Gigabyte X58-UD5 (Solved)

the memory controller on socket 1366 chips has trouble achieving 1600mhz, you might have it set on that.
for 45nm chips, it maxes out at about 1500mhz.

Have you tried manually relaxing the timing on the ram? Try 10-10-10-27 and 128 for tRFC.

might have to tweak you mem voltage, I had a lot of overclocking issues when I dropped a w3520 on my ud5

Well I have been running them from 1.40 to 1.70 volts in small steps. Nothing works

Hi. No I have been trying 9.9.9.24 128 tRFC and 800Mhz I belive

Done that. My mobo won't accept any changes in frequency. Volts are ok

Note. When putting in my 920 I can change everything but not with this cpu

with the ud5 I had my 920 @ 3.8 6x2g @ 1600
w3520 would completely refuse to run stable with 6 dims but ran @ 4.0 with only 3
I cant remember what volts I had to set manually but I had most set to auto with load line enabled

Can someone please tell me what their " CPU clock drive " is set to?
I put my 920 back in and started pushing it. I notice that my clock drive is set to 800mv now

With the 6core Xeon that number was 700mv

Also Pci express clock drive is set 200mv higher for my 920

Summary

CPU clock drive = 700mv
Pci express clock drive = 700mv

700/700 feels like a fail safe setup but i might be wrong?
I am very curious as i have seen other people with Gigabyte boards.
Can you please take a screenshot of your MIT section in bios. I need to know what settings you are running this 6 core with

It could be that your Gigabyte board and the L5639 just flat don't work good together. The member over at [H]ard forums seems to have the same issue with his board as well.

If I were you, and you can actually find one reasonable, I would grab a different board. Maybe an Asus or MSI motherboard and give that a shot. Either pick up another board or sell the Xeon.

Well i have seen a guy that managed to squeeze this CPU pretty well with the same board that i have

Funny thing is that i can set the FSB from an application called Setfsb. Why? Why cant i do it inside my bios when i can in Windows. At 150 its pretty unstable and i cant find any good settings to take it feather

Also i get some red numbers in the Hex code.Not sure what that is.Cant be good anyway?

I have asked Gigabyte why i cant overclock this CPU and got this answer back to me

I cant figure out how he made it? Sure he has an older Bios F12 but that shouldn't be the issue.

Promptly stuck in in the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 v1.0 (BIOS on the board is currently F12), and it works just fine.
The multipler goes from 12 to 18, but skips 17 for some reason.
In any case, just have to install Windows and see what it can do.
From the reviews of this board, I am looking at around a 215 - 220 for max bclk, so 3870-3960Mhz.
Would be nice if I could get a solid 4Ghz at 222-223 bclk.

Hmm, maybe try flashing it to the F12 bios? Don't know if that would work or not.

Maybe worth a try. Back your bios up first though.

I had the same problems and it turned out I had bent 1 pin in the socket while replacing i920 with the xeon. Check your socket pins!!!

Well i found out what was wrong at last! After countless of hours it was just memory settings. As i am pretty new to this manual overclocking i started to change the numbers on trc and trfc and also set the multi to 8x on the memory 16x on uncore as it obviously need to be twice as high then the memory multi.

8X memory multi =16x uncore multi
200BCLK = 1600MHZ

trc 45
trfc 90

CPU core voltage 1.200
Mem voltage 1.64
Qpi voltage 1.26

Thats my settings for now. i will try to get higher but as i am new to this im not sure i have done everything as i should
