CE states have to be enable along with turbo.. Running 6 cores @ 3.5ghz doesn't suck.. It's not running at 2.13.. That chip @ 3.5 is a workhorse! Be happy! :)

:) no but an increase with @200Mhz should give some boost in the better direction not the wrong direction if you know what I mean. Feels like the CPU is limited as the Benchmark shows.

I am happy no doubt about that, Only a bit confused why those 200 doesn't apply

I have something that says C3/C6/C7 State support [Disable]

I agree! I have mine at 3.59 ghz and at that speed it beat a 4770k in Cinebench! Amazing for a $90 CPU!

You need those C states for 19x and 20x.

o_O

it has 2 more cores and 4 more workable threads...

so yeah... it better beat a 4c

but u guys all miss the point.
You are now all stuck in a black hole...
Great job getting stuck in here.. want me to pass you some popcorn while u realize how deep this hole is?

now lets see how all upgrades look and taste to you if you require a power house for encoding / blending / heavy core activity and seeing how games are now highly multi threaded, gaming as well if u can get as close to 4ghz as possible or above..

it will be SOUR as heck... your gonna sit in the corner and twiddle your thumbs like i have until Haswell-E is comes out... and then you'll be praying to the hardware god to bless your motherboard so it lasts...

:\ :'(

And you're a moderator here? With disparaging comments like that, it's a wonder.. WE chose this chip for it's multithread performance and it IS a powerhouse already. I doubt I'll want or need an upgrade for at least 3 yrs.. Act like a mod please, and don't disparage people's choices..

Mod callouts are not permitted. If you disagree with his point, fine, disagree with it. Do not bring his status as moderator into the discussion. Thank you, -Admin DrPizza

Yes well my render times in both 3ds Max and Vue has been greatly reduced with this CPU! Its a big difference to me!

Also I am working with CAD,As far as the applications i use had Multi treading support I notice a big difference between this and my 920

I bought this cheap (~$60) and I can say it was my best buy in all time (most bang for the bucks). Wouldn't buy it if I needed a X58 board but hey I had one. And still I have some difficulties to solve before I get 100% satisfied

I get exactly where you are coming from. 2 years of ago I side graded from a Core2Quad q6600@3GHz to an AMD A6-3650(2.6Ghz). Last year i "upgraded" to an A8-3870K(3Ghz). Neither APUs were overclocked, as my computing experience was always "good". Upgrading my video card & adding an SSD brought about the noticeable improvements.

If I hadn't found this thread about a month ago, I probably would have upgraded to either an AMD FX-8320, or an Intel Xeon E3-1230v2, whichever I found the best deal on (mobo & processor). I had just about given up on overclocking, which is pretty sad when I look back at all the fun I've had (my first overclock was the Pentium II 233 @350Mhz if I recall correctly).

Just when I thought that "budget" overclocking was dead, after reading this thread multiple times I ended up picking up a Xeon L5639, an Asus Sabertooth X58, and a Corsair H80 (overkill, i know). Combined with a few sticks Registerd ECC memory (left over from server upgrade projects) I now have a BEAST of a machine that I am excited about. I don't see myself needing to upgrade for a few years. Especially with i7 "K" CPUs retailing over $300.

Thank you everyone who contributed to this tread!

Current specs:
Xeon L5639 @3.6GHz (18x200)
Asus Sabertooth X58 (stock voltages, power saving features off, Memclock@1603)
3x Kingston KVR1333D3D8R9S/4G (2Rx8 512M x 72-Bit PC3-10600 CL9 Registered w/Parity 240-Pin DIMM)
3x Micron 2GB DDR3 ECC Registered 2R8 PC3-10600 CL9 (HP OEM)
Corsair H80 (idle temps about 27-30 degrees C, full load temps never higher than 63 degrees C, 70 degrees F ambient temp in Sunny San Diego)

I'm still testing the system for stability, but so far so good. The memory passed 2 runs of Memtest86+ @1600. The CPU was ok after 50 passes of IBT on both Maximum & Very High. Prime95 small FFT also ran successfully for over 12 hours.

As our shop has upgraded a bunch of HP servers the past year, I had a bunch of various Registered ECC memory modules I could test. 16GB & 8GB sticks fail to post (Kingston, Nanya, & Micron) - the Memory Error LED on the motherboard stays red. Certain 4GB sticks also did not work (don't have the specs in front of me, but most likely single rank or high capacity chips).

2GB Hynix and Micron modules (HP OEM memory modules, 2Rx8 PC3-10600), and the Kingston 4GB modules above worked perfectly and overclocked to DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800) without issue on stock voltage.

Now If I could only figure out how to get the power saving features to work... Damn there are a lot of settings I still need to research in the Bios!

All you have to do is enable Speedstep & CE States..

Thanks man!
Well i was playing yesterday and the computer rebooted after 20min of playing . The temps was ok as i checked that before it rebooted every 2 minutes. I also logged the temps. Now i ran HCI Design memtest and this makes me a bit scared!

here is just a little bit from the logfile

Pretty obvious that you have some flaky ram.. At the very least doesn't like to be pushed..

Can it be a timing issue? I have less errors in auto mode (No overclocking)

1333MHZ 1.50V
9.9.9.24 2T
tRFC 74

When clocking tRFC 74 wont work. The boot fails so i changed it to 90

*EDIT* So I have been running prime and after 15 minutes the computer reboots.
Sure the temp of the CPU tops at 69deg Celsius but i have read the TDP should be around 79deg

I have seen this in the logbook (Kernel power) after the reboot .

Processor 4 has been limited by a device other than kernel power manager.
IA32_CLOCK_MODULATION MSR = 0x2.
Elapsed time since the last incident was logged = 0s.
Log Interval = 1000 events.

And again im back to square one. I do not know where to start. Is the memory sticks broken or have I done something wrong?
What happens if I buy new sticks,Will it work or is it a gamble?

SPD 8X
16x uncore

Vcore was set to 1.2v
qpi/VVT 1.26v
Ram 1.64v
the rest is set to auto

Also my ram timings is set to 9,9,9,24 2T
trc 45 .had to set this to 45 or my computer wouldn't boot even after 1mhz incremental on the BCLK
trfc 90 .had to set this to 90 or my computer wouldn't boot even after 1mhz incremental on the BCLK

Also do Realtemp show the right values? Im not sure anymore after i installed HWinfo
2vklvr7.jpg

*EDIT2* Ok so i have made some progress

First i did uninstall HWinfo and installed the latest x64 and it shows the value more like Realtemp now.

Second i have been trying to get this machine stable in Prime 95 which i didnt run before.Just used Intels cpu tool to verify the overclock.
After a couple of hours trying almost everything i rised the IOH core volt. I assume this deliver power to the Northbridge?

Anyway now i am at 3200MHz stable in prime without any errors and got a coretemp of maximum 62 i think.
Will try to get feather. Will stop at 3.6GHz and go back and run this in 3.2GHz if i make it

I got one of these a little while ago (£80 by the time it was shipped) to replace my 920 on a P6T Deluxe V1. The 920 was a space heater near 3.5GHz and rather than replace everything I thought I'd give one of these a shot.

I think I only added 0.125v to vCore to get multi-thread tests to pass with IntelBurnTest but I had to make a few more voltage tweaks to get single-thread to pass 20 iterations because of the x20 multiplier.

It is rock solid stable now though at 200bclk, so I'm happy. A fantastic chip for the price.

Similar story for me. I'm on a non deluxe P6T.

I couldn't get 200BLK stable with turbo, the single thread would not pass IBT because of 20x.

I'm currently running at 16 x 209 (3.34) @ 1.24
Did get up to 16 x 218 (3.5) but couldn't get stable and temps were getting out of hand for my old Scythe Mugen 2

Would you mind posting your settings to get 200BLK stable with turbo?

Has anyone experimented with turning hyperthreading off?

I ran my 920 with it off most of the time in the search of lower temps and quieter cooling, that and I didn't really need all that compute.

I don't think anyone did, because these rigs are limited by the motherboard and not the chip due to the low multiplier.

Pretty obvious that you have some flaky ram.. At the very least doesn't like to be pushed..

I only would run MemTest 4.0 HCI Design hcidesign.com/memtest with one
test for each thread to detect errors in the cpu caches.

Memtest86+ is used to test your memory sticks

Dear god I love these chips.

Spun up a VM because I wanted to test Plex and see if I could get my HDHomeRun Prime to work with it. A little while later, 2 cores and a few gig of ram, this bad little boy was happily transcoding the MPEG2 stream from the HDHomeRun to h.264 and flinging it over the network in realtime to my desktop without any dropouts, while barely breaking a sweat. (Oh, this is all while a couple other VMs are handling my network and VOIP duties)

Ironically in the process it also proved that whatever I thought was going on with either the HDHomeRun or Comcast simply wasn't the case, and/or MCE is a steaming pile.

Upgrading my video card & adding an SSD brought about the noticeable improvements.

thats exactly what i meant in my sarcasm.

if u look at my earlier threads u see nothing but rants from me and intel cuz they produced such a powerful chip, yet never released it anything near it ever again.

This is why im kinda sad... they gave us gulftown, which was uber powerful, then threw sandy-e at us..

Us gulftown users were like WTH!!! u side graded us mostly... not upgrade... so most of us are waiting on a true upgrade.

I don't think anyone did, because these rigs are limited by the motherboard and not the chip due to the low multiplier.

nah.. the X58 always had issues pushing the qpi over 200.... 220 was actually considered reallly good.. anything over would require too much QPI vcore, which would send the gulftown to an early grave.

That's basically the same thing I said. The combos are limited by the motherboard they sit on because of the low multiplier.

No reason to disable HT to gain a little headroom, because it has no effect on the motherboard side.

I do apologize for my post then. I did not realize it was a sarcastic post.. I always try to be positive & helpful. Sorry..

This chip is amazing and does whatever I throw at it. I got my kid an L5620 to see how it clocks on my old board. Results won't be as amazing as 6 cores but should still achieve respectable benchmarks, and be good enough for some gaming and other typical chores.. $25 for it makes it a good alternative to the LGA 1366 I7's..
