I recently came across a few E5-4640 CPU's at a local tip shop and for the price ($5) i just had to grab them.
these are to my knowledge the first revision of the chip (v1)

I am facing a problem with identifying a motherboard to fit these though. i came across this link while googling http://www.pc-specs.com/cpu/Intel/Xeon_E5_Series/Xeon_E5-4640/2090/Compatible_Motherboards and it seems the information isn't entirely clear.

lets say for example the Gigabyte GA-79-UP4 is listed as a compatible board but in the documentation on the manufacturers website it claims support for only for the Xeon E5-4640v2 Ivy Bridge-EP.

I seem to be running into this a lot. its seems these boards are for the x79 chipset and i think the v1 only works with C602 but I'm just not sure anymore.

Any input would be amazing, cheers

In that generation, the E5-26xx and E5-46xx were exactly the same, just one was unlocked to allow quad socket operation. Most professional Server boards have the microcode present to support either processor, even if it's not on the fully validated list.

Likewise, most professional Server boards that could run v2 (Ivy Bridge) CPUs will also run Sandy Bridge CPUs. They are backwards compatible.

Getting a fully validated solution will almost invariably require you to get a quad-socket motherboard, and I'm not aware of any of those that fit in a standard form factor (you'd either have to modify a large case, or get the chassis the motherboard was designed for).

No comment at all really one way or the other. You get what you pay for! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. It's a complete crap shoot.
