Xeon E5 2687W For Sale on eBay

Ebay link removed

Pretty sure this is illegal, but this is actually a half decent price. I kinda wanna buy it, but buying somebody's abused buggy ES is not a good use of $800. 😛

I expect big slaughter... i demand big slaughter!!

Just so everyone knows, this is not a true 2687W ES. Its a 3.0 GHz B0 stepping, which would have been manufactured around February - March. The true E5-2687W ES (3.1GHz, finalized turbo) only showed up with the C0 stepping. From my own testing (of a 2.0 GHz B0), the B0 stepping will not accept even the 125 MHz X79 Strap ratio. A few posters at hardocp have had similar issues. This may be due to speed path issues that VR-Zone reported on at one point. It remains to be seen if the Cx stepping (presumably mass production = C2) octal cores will accept non-standard strap ratios.

EDIT: After some research, it seems that ASUSTechMKT posted this regarding LGA2011 Xeon Strap Ratios:

This is not a UEFI limitation or bug the Xeon CPUs do not support strap changes.

LAME! Well then, I guess that's one way to keep the E5's out of the hands of high rollin' enthusiasts. Which then makes me wonder why boards like the EVGA SR-X will be made...?

One does have to wonder......

I believe there are rumors that the E5-2687W will be unlocked, like the W3680 of Xeons past. Though from what I've heard the C0 engineering samples of the 2687W are locked. I don't think those are quite "Qualification Sample" stage however. I suppose the final QS and mass production 2687Ws could be unlocked. That might explain the SR-3 and the rumored Asus dual socket board.

Ok, that clarifies it more. I thought it was just violating a contract, which might be a civil (as opposed to criminal) matter.
