Hey guys,

I am a CG student, thinking about upgrading my computer to a Xeon mobo so I can work smoothly on my graduation projects ...

Since the new retail xeons are expensive, I thought about getting a used one, I found a Xeon E5 2695 v3 ES AND 2683 V3 ES

on here
HTML:
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SR/SR1XG.html
it says that C1 stepping and retail are the same

I read a bit about these beta cpu's, and from what I understand I have to check the stepping number, if it's closer to retail then it should be good, if not, better avoid it, but I am not sure if it's true and there is no other risks or problems with compatibility etc ... since I am planning on using it heavily, not necessarily overclocking or anything but using it for hours daily ( 3d renders etc ... )

I just want to know guys, if any of you owned this test cpu's before, and if they're reliable ? What other things to look for ?

For the motherboard, I am thinking about getting an ASUS Z10pe WS - to eventually add another CPU when I get a bit more money :)

And keep my actual fan and gpu, which are Noctua D14NH and GTX 970

Thank you so much for your help guys, any advice would be very much appreciated

Best,

Guys, has anybody have had an experience with a xeon es ?

Also, should I wait a few months more for a new socket ? I don't want to get a socket that is dying and won't be able to upgrade next years, unless the difference in performance is not substantial.

Can't wait to read your responses,

You should be aware that those ES chips are property of Intel. Whoever is selling them don't actually have the right to do so.

Thank you for your answers, good to know, but I've seen that people are buying even startups etc ...

For now, I am thinking about getting either

-ASUS z10pe D16
-Supermicro x10DAi ( What's the difference between this one and the one below ? )

-Supermicro X10DRi ( From I've read this one will fit in any EATX unlike the one x10dai, BUT it needs special narrow fans I think, I have never heard about these, anyone can confirm and explain this please ? )

I want the supermicro because I think it's more reliable and workstation and server oriented, this computer is going to be used mostly for 3d work, rendering etc ... and I will probably not overclock the cpu or anything like that, stability over performance

but the problem with the supermicro, is that it won't fit in any EATX case, according to some comments posted in different forums, can anybody confirm that ?

what do you suggest as far as cases ? I am thinking getting a Phanteks,
My actual one is a Cooler Master HAF 922, can I use it for my build ?

My other concern would be the PSU, I have a cooler master silent pro M 1000, would I need a new one or I can keep this one from my old computer ?

I have a Noctua NH-D14, but my guess is that I can't use it because it's for a different socket, right ?

Thank you guys for your help

Buying the ES chips is asking for trouble. And around here, nobody is going to endorse what is basically breaking the law.

Instead, go read this thread.

If you need a high core count CPU on the cheap, these are your best bet. Get a nice dual socket board and a pair of these and go nuts.

Yea, I read a bit about them, it's intel's property etc ...

I will try to find something in my budget, or just start with one good cpu and then add the other one later when I get enough money

Take a look at my last post, and let me know if you can help answering my other questions about the other parts

thanks
