I game alot...and RAR alot.

I OC...so i'd say 3.0 on the xeon, and at least 3.5 on the 8400.

Which chip should I get?

I got the X3210 for $225 shipped a week or two ago for an extreme budget quad OC project. For the $247 it costs now I'd rather get a E8400 and save 40 bucks. I expect my Xeon will keep up with mildly overclocked (read: under 4 ghz) E8400s on the kinds of things I plan to do. And for gaming 2.8 ghz on a single core is plenty.

Haven't had time to crank the X3210 to full potential yet. It runs great at 350fsb on a DS3L, about 1.21v after vdroop -- 2.8ghz, nice and cool. Not tested for stability other than quick and dirty gaming. Sure is 'snappy' though. =)

I have 4 of the $3/gig AR ram sticks, so 3.2G may be forever of reach for me. With a Q6600 I'd be up to 3.15 ghz @ 350fsb -- a much nicer OC.

For a total platform cost of a hair over 300 bucks I'm exceedingly happy. That's Phenom pricing, but with core2 performance and stability. If I could have nabbed the P35E for $60 AR my quad upgrade would have been *cheaper* than a 9500 build and within spitting range of a quality 5000x2 build. But today, it'd be E8400 all the way.

Go with the Xeon, I currently have my x3210 at 8x485 (~3.9ghz) with vcore at 1.37 after droop.

Granted your results may vary but still for $190 thats a steal for a quad core.

I'm a little confused what the "layman's" difference is between your typical core2quad or c2d processors and 2-core xeon vs 4-core xeon.

All I really know is, it seems much more expensive to put systems together with the latter (Mac Pro... workstation mobo/ram, etc)

But, what is the Xeon better or worse at accomplishing?

(Currently looking at intel's website, and their "benchmarks")

There's no real difference between the 775 Xeon's and their equivalent core processors. They just come in more speed options.

Amusing thing to say considering your quad is at *3.9* ghz sipping power. My god, nearly 500 mhz FSB on a quad. Maybe 4+ ghz on 45nm quads is not such a foolish thing to hope for after all.

Xeons are reportedly a higher binning than garden variety core2s. I didn't examine my stock heatsink very closely, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's better than a standard one.

Other than that, yeah, no huge difference. Some motherboards may not properly recognize xeons, but my DS3L is happy enough. According to gigabyte's web site the X3210 is not a supported cpu for that board.

For $190 it's a steal. Unless your pricing also has the E8400 for $150 and Phenom 9500 at $100. =)

I was amazed at the fsb i got out of my motherboard. It's an MSI P35 Neo2, the anandtech review said they couldn't really get past 465 but I had no real problems.

The review also showed a significant decrease in memory performance above 445 mhz, but I found by changing the jumpers to 333mhz (I think that's how you adjust the strapping on this board) memory performance nearly doubled (~5500mb/s to ~9500mb/s)

Either way I'm happy with my X3210 now.

Is that deal available for others?

yeah ill buy 2 of them if they are

based on lack of response, I'm guessing they're not available at that price...

The e8400 is $189 until Feb 10th at microcenter, but you must purchase it in store only, not online. I emailed them; wish I had someone who could pick up one for me.

mt xeon x3210 top out 3.6Ghz on air with p965ds3 3.3, I understand nvidia board is dificult to OC, but can't pass 333MHZ, you need to bump voltage little higher and make sure whole pu has decent cooling
