Xeon 3060 or E6600?

I've been reading bits and pieces of info, but haven't found any long threads or discussions about this. The Xeon is basically the same as the E6600, but designed for servers. I've read a few places that they run a bit cooler. So for $10 is it worth getting?

I'm getting my rig configured so I can do some OCing and want the best bang for the buck.

Any suggestions?

They are both sckt 775s...both have 4mb of cache...I think theoretically they should be identical, but some swear they xeons are a tad bit better. I could only guess this is because Xeons being server/workstation grade cpus are a tad bit more mission critical in terms of exceptance of errata.

However that is assuming there is any different of a testing procedure, which I dont know if there is or not...

Ask AT member "PM" if they are tested or certified differently.

I know it seemd like when I got mine more ppl with 3060's were running higher then me. That is sometimes difficult to be certain baout because most of them were running Asus P5B-deluxes (different motherboards then me).

I've had two xeons, a 3050 and 3060 and both clocked well...

i'd agree with duvie and say they are pretty close to the normal 6400 and 6600 though.

it's not clear cut like the X2 vs. opteron where the opteron clearly clocked better than most X2's.

I guess you can't go wrong for $10. The chances of a better overclock seem to be very small, but you're hardly losing anything.

Duvie, is talk about them using less voltage to reach the same overclocks as the equivalent C2Ds just a misconception/rumor/BS? I seem to remember some forums where people said so in a Google search a while back.

You mean default vcore is lowering to begin with?

the default voltage is lower on the Xeon's but that doesn't mean that it's going to overclock better at say 3.6

i.e. a 6600 with a 1.30 VID hits 3.6 @ 1.45 doesn't mean a 3060 with a 1.25 VID will hit 3.6 @ 1.4 volts...

For $10 i'd go with the Xeon.

It does seem they OC slightly better.
