Xeon 3040 Conroe on Socket 775?

Minot

Member
I was looking at the Newegg CPU selection and I noticed the Xeon 3040 is a Conroe part (4 MB L2 cache) and says it runs on socket 775 (not socket 771). For the same frequency as the E6300, but double the cache, this seems like an interesting option for $201... that is if it will boot on any normal Core 2 Duo supported motherboard.

Has anyone taken a gamble with this chip and gotten it working? If so, what motherboard did you use?

Newegg has it listed wrong, it should say a 2 mb cache for 3040 and 3050. Only the 3060 and 3070 have the 4 mb cache. Also these are meant for the 3000 series chipset...hopefully they're like the 939 optys though and work on all the core 2 duo boards.

I'm not sure why you want to pay extra for a Xeon, which in all due respects is equivalent to an E6300.

the 3000 series xeons, are exactly the same as core 2 duo and run on lga775 for 1 socket servers. they are supposed to be the same price, but seeing as the volume isnt as much and not every place sells them i'd assume they'd be closer to the official list price.

5100 series is the woodcrest lga771 . the 3040 is the e6300. it is 2mb. if you look at the picture on newegg you can even read it off the box.

Intel's Information Is in Conflict With the Product White Paper.....They should Run on a 965x/975x Easily...

I will call Intel and get them to correct the Product Pages ... or post back the correct info.....

These should scale nicely... Server chips usually have better Statistical Data and allow better scaling....

Nice Find OP !! They are Brand New.

Huge News......Okay after Contacting INTEL IPD Channel Support.... They are all 4 MB Caches.......

These Chips Could end up being a Very Sweet Thing........$ 200.00 Beasts.. Will be interesting to See How High The Low End Chips will Scale ... The 3050's are about $ 260.00.

90% of the E-tail Sites have the Product info Wrong....

i dont get it then. where did newegg get that box picture of the 3040. if you look at the label on the box it says 2mb cache.

i am pretty sure their channel support is retarded, and their tech docs are not up to date. just like their motherboard driver pages are not up to date.

for a long time it says the 946gz did not support 1066 bus and they all in fact do.

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reselle...rver/processors/3000/feature/index.htm

that is the channel site, that says its 2mb cache.

Upon further review, they are scaled just like the other C2D's. Xeon 3060 and up are 4mb cache versions. All those below are 2mb cache.

The 4 MB cache is exactly why this caught my eye. It costs $120 more for the first 4 MB Core 2 Duo Conroe part (E6600). If you could put a Xeon 3040 in a good overclocking P965 motherboard than you might have a super deal on your hand... just like the socket 939 1xx Opteron line worked perfectly well with normal socket 939 motherboard but OCed extremely well.

I think the only reason it might have compatability issues is that the Xeon line is intended to be used with ECC-Registered memory. But, I believe that is strictly dependent on the northbridge chipset (unlike the Opteron's which have the memory controller built directly in the CPU).

So my question stands... Has anyone gotten a Xeon 3040 to run on a standard P965 or 975 based non-server motherboard?

Thanks for all your thoughts and insight!

The Xeon 3050, 3040 are 2mb cache versions.

That plus the wide-spread rumour that Opterons are made of better sillicon for server use. So who knows if these chips are better quality than regular C2D thus better overclocking. 😀 Let's hope and see.

I think we're all finding conflicting info. The Intel Processor Finder is showing 4 MB.

Has anyone happened to purchase a Xeon 3040 from Newegg and can relay what they recieved? 4 MB or 2 MB shared cache?

Update : (7:00PM EST) INTEL Called back after 6 hrs. and Confirmed the The L2 Cache is 4 MB.... that the Product Boxes are Incorrect.

I Also spoke with NewEgg....their Product Box Image was shot at the Fontana Warehouse.

Intel IPD is Going to Work To Correct the Product Lables, and the Website Information....

This ended up being a Long Conversation about all the Conflicting Mis-Information....

I'll try to post an Update tommorow. The Corrective Action on this will be Hilarious !!

This is Enough To Piss Off the Good Humor Man !! hehehe

Definitely, because even intels internal spec sheets say these are 2 mb cache and everything posted since July has said the 3040 and 3050 are 2 mb cache. Who's going to be the first to take the plunge?

I'm eagerly waiting for the first experience. As soon as I hear someone hitting anywhere from 3.6GHz~4.0GHz, I'm buying it. 😀

ND40oz: You've got a heck of a workstation there. 8GB FB-DIMMs quad-channel?!

Yeah it's nice 🙂, atleast I don't have to worry about BF2 loading times. Unfortunately it doesn't have any overclocking options, so I may need to buy one of these to help feed the addiction. Besides, I've been wanting to upgrade the Pentium D system and this chip should fit bill.

Yes!!!

Edit: Are these going to work in current 965 chipsets?

it should work on the 965 with bios support. sadly i have an intel branded board... maybe it wont work.

this is interesting newst hough, i am still skeptical as it would be "too good to be true" to be just $30 more than a normal e6300.

i als onoticed all the hp servers with 3040 chips also say 2mb. i would assume HPs people would have actually checked too... so who knows. hopefully someone buys one and checks. most of the workstations boards suck btw, they are all x8 slots max.

I think people are a little too optimistic about hitting the mid-high 3Ghz range, especially with it being 4MB L2.
