I take that back. You can, at full resolution, clearly see 2 red "wing" lights and 1 white *tail* light. Very interesting.

<< sorry if this is a repost >>

Yes it is, but who can keep track of all these threads with thousands of posts a day? :)

Good images! I'm sure in the next month that this will be displayed there will be many many more.

The artifact to the left on image nine is probably an airplane that got captured while the shutter was open. After all, it's night time and all of these pictures are time exposures.

Cheers!

<< amazing...

although I do have a question... in picture 4 what is that "thing" in the air to the left of the lights?
>>

I am pretty sure the person took some of these picture with long exposure so that "thing" could be an airplane.

<< Good pic of it
WTF?! ^
>>

Remember...this is a long exposure...and the lights on, say, a single-engine Cessna will blink off and on. That's probably what it is...or a helicopter? With lights on the landing gear causing the two parallel streaks?

Those are very powerful lights, I passed them on my way back to my dorm. Kept staring at them while I drove on the jersey turnpike. WOW

That's a really cool tribute... I didn't know they were going to do that. What symbolism!!

However they're probably not Xenon lights.

Those are mercury vapor or metal-halide HID lamp.

i saw some video footage on TV... i think those pics make it look a lot brighter than it actually is.
pretty cool though. there was some article in the national geographic about those bright lights in las vegas. that was awesome.

<< do they have those exact lights for my car? if yes, lmk >>

Even if they are xenon lights, it's two banks of 50 spotlights I think. Which would be quite difficult to attach to your car.

They are actually CW Xenon discharge lamps. 7 kW per capsule.

Cheers!

Nice media projector! Movies would look pretty good on that...so would Links 2001! :p

Arc lamps of this size really aren't uncommon. You should see the flashlamps used in really big solid state lasers. I've also worked with some large Xenon CW lamps used to simulate Caribbean sunlight over artifical reefs. These puppies had a colour temperature of 70,000 degrees Kelvin (which would appear very blue) but they were extremely bright white like the sun! They also have to be run in an inert gas sleeve because the UV would turn all the O2 in the immediate air to O3 which is bad. :Q

As for beams visible in the air...

If you really want something that can truly seen for hundreds of miles nothing beats a Laserscope 800. Over 60 Watts pure CW at 532 nM. Problem is planes can't fly near it, and many birds and other living flying things that get curious would die if it was left running for long! :Q These lasers will run off a 50 Amp 240 Volt circuit as well!

Cheers!

It's probably just a piece of dust or something on the lens.

Or is that too boring of an answer? :D

Look at this picture here.

You can clearly see that its from an airplane. Looks like about a four to six second exposure.

Cheers!
