Xenon lights about to get banned?

USA Today story on HID lights.

Personally, I have never experienced a problem with them myself...the same debate happened when halogen lights came on the scene 20 years ago.

Because HID lights are on high-end cars, they've become a fashion statement. Auto-parts firms sell blue-tint halogen lights that resemble the HID color, for those dying to have their $9,000 Kia Rios mistaken at night for $120,000 Mercedes-Benz S-classes

LOL...even USA Today is goofing on ricers! :D

I don't think Kia Rios are usually riced. I think the comment was made because Kias are dirt cheap.

HID headlights are great but take some getting used to. There is a sharp and I mean VERY SHARP cutoff. It's a weird feeling at first because regualar halogens slowly fade out.

Yep...I have them on my A4. Took a couple of drives getting used to but now there's NO going back to halogen!

Here in Vancouver, the cops are really targeting import drivers (mainly because of a couple of street race accidents... but the funny thing is, around 1/2 of those accidents actually involved domestics instead of imports, go figure)... Well, they are giving out tickets for anything and everything they can, eg. exhaust, lowered cars, etc...

Well the funny thing is, some of those cops don't know jack about what's legal and what's not... Some people actually got ticketed for HID headlights (not the aftermarket lookalike bulbs, but real HID on cars like the S2000)... And when the car owners try to argue that the headlights came stock, the cop replied: "Well coming from the factory doesnt mean that it's legal... you should have checked yourself and replace any illegal parts after you get the car..."

LOL! what a bunch of morons...

Hey, you get no argument here... I understand not everyone know a lot about cars, but don't give people tickets when you don't know what you are talking about! :)

PS. I am not one of those people who get these tickets. I dont have the money to drive a car that has HID from the factory :)

As a non-HID driver I would like to say that those things really do hurt my eyes when I drive at you and they need to be refined. I do not think banning is the correct solution, but they need to work on the design!

Dayam...they'd better not ban those lights...i think that lights are one of the things that make a car look bad @ss. As far as cars that shouldn't be riced...i don't think any korean cars (altho i'm part korean), kia's, and american cars look right...

HID's don't bother me, just teh fake blue tinted ones.... I don't understand why the stupid DOT hasn't improved our headlight standards yet, european spec headlights are so superior to what we have, yet illegal here....

I think there should be limits on brightness and glare that is allowed on the road. I don't think we should target specific technologies, but instead have standards.

I say if it's annoying/distracting to any drivers - it should be banned. And those headlights most certainly are annoying and distracting. Good for you, you can see better on back roads with no lights, but it's blinding the hell out of the people coming the other way. Whatever happened to clicking your high beams on when you couldn't see?

So why do so many us car enthusiasts convert their cars to eurospec headlights? I don't think they like blowing their money. I hate those brighter lights, with sharper cutoffs and better focusing.

In the US blue light is a color reserved for use by Law enforcement only. If the police pull you over they can ticket you or tow the vechicle if you have a blue tint to your headlights and it is ENTIRELY up to the officer.
