Xenon E3 or i5/i7 for socket 1150?

I have narrowed my pick down to 2 motherboards. Both support the Xenon cpu's.

I am looking at a mid range i5, low end i7 and a Xenon E3 with integrated GPU.

Which would be better?

Xeon, not Xenon. Xenon is the processor used in the XBox 360. 😉

What do you want to use your computer for? Do you need the integrated GPU? Do you think ECC memory would be useful? Or do you just want gaming bang for buck?

Xenon is a pinball machine I own, so I always mess up the spelling......

Just looking for best bang for buck. Yes will require integrated GPU, I use for media, occasional games. ECC ram is of no importance unless it can be purchased at a bargain price.

I just have this feeling that neither an i7 nor an E3 Xeon is appropriate for this application. Can you be more specific about what it will be used for?

I do not want a celeron, pentium, or i3. So anything from an i5, i7, xeon is fine. Best bang for buck.

-Youtube videos (flash) need to play like butter for 3 years in the future on integrated graphics.
-Occasional games at med setting.
-Photo editing
-Encoding DVDs
-Internet
-Virtual machines in vmware or hyper v.
-whatever else future brings.

I guess I can assume you have no desire to overclock, and since the "low end" i7 is only $20 less than the high end i7, I'd probably tell you to look at an E3-1245 v3. It's pretty much a 4770 with 100MHz lower Turbo multiplier, and the same graphics. They're $287.99 at Amazon right now.

So the Xeon E3 1245 must be cheaper for a reason, what else is doesn't it have?

You are right, none to maybe a minor bit of overclocking.
