This is one of the first PREMIUMS and it has already experienced the RROD and has been sent in for repair.

I got it back, and now it tends to freeze up while playing Halo3. Is this consistent with the older models? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the problem? Or should I just get rid of it and invest in one of the new Falcon XBOX360s?

UPDATE:

I have the RROD AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freezing usually means you got one of the bad refurbs and it's headed for another RRoD. So be patient until it finishes dying and you'll get a free repair from MS.

If you can wait awhile for buying a second 360, Jasper is supposed to be out before the end of the year and it will shrink the graphics chip (the alleged cause of RRoD) from 90nm down to 65nm. This should reduce power and heat and improve reliability over falcon (which is already "OK" for reliability).

RROD happens to ALL version of X360. Just 'cause you got the Falcon doesn't mean the problem went away. There are many reports of falcon RROD.

i'd definetely look into custom cooling solutions like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRtPmlJKH9E . Folks at xbox scene are pretty helpful.

Also this a guide that shows you how you could improve the cooling without additional fans.

That 1st video is effing ridiculous. You will VOID your warranty if you cut a hole in your Xbox and put a fan on it.

With all the return boxes, shipping charges, and man power they used for the RROD, shouldn't they use that money to develop a better cooling solution?

It's definitely an annoyance, but at least Microsoft stepped up and extended the warranty to 3 years. It'll be interesting to see what they do when November rolls around and the launch systems are out of warranty. If they haven't fixed the issue (for real) and they don't extend the warranty again, I'm sure they'll have a lot of pissed off launch 360 owners. I'm not sure if the 3 year clock restarts when you send your 360 in for repair. The RRoD kept me from buying the 360 until about a year and a half after it came out, and when I finally did buy it I bought it at Costco so I could take advantage of their return policy when I needed to. Turned out I did need to return it due to RRoD, and because my 360 warned me by freezing a few times a day before it finally died, I had already purchased a replacement and had zero downtime. I just swapped out the hard drives and returned the old one.

As for why we're willing to put up with it, for me there are a few reasons -
1. The game selection is far and away better than either of the other two systems
2. Xbox Live. If you have friends on Live, you want to play with your friends instead of random people. I hardly play on Live at all unless I'm playing with a friend. Xbox Live has a big carryover from last generation, plus the fact that it came out a year earlier means a lot of people (~6 million) bought it in that year, and that made it the logical choice for those people's friends.
3. The controller. This is really personal preference, but the Xbox 360 controller feels perfect in my hands. I bought the Nyko Zero hoping it'd be a close equivalent for the PS3, but it sucked. :( So for now I'm buying all exclusive games for the 360, mostly because of the controller and partly because of Live.

But that's just me.

Well the reason why I put it up with it is because my cousin gave this to me when it had the RROD. This was before the warranty was extended. So I got a free XBOX360 by waiting out the warranty thing with Microsoft. I'm willing to buy another one since that would be like my first XBOX or rather paying for my first XBOX360.

Nah. He'd already purchased another one anyway so he was just sitting on this one. He just asked for me to help him fix his computer or beef it up a little. I've helped him on a few occassions lol. I actually need to fix his overheating video card and processor fan soon too.

I'm on my 3rd premium, 2 RROD, and this one has the faulty DVD drive. The humorous irony, is that almost all of the locks-up happen with Microsoft games, Halo 3, CrackDown, and Gears of War. I get them occasionally with Legos:TCS though too. Every other title runs fine for hours and hours. If I play Gears MP, it never locks. just SP or local co-op.

I've tried formatting the HDD, using a 512mb MMU, clearing the cache before every session, I've put a high CFM stand fan right on it and had a room temp in the 60'sF, horizontal-vertical, it doesn't make any difference. It just doesn't like some discs.

Long story short, I went to uberTarget yesterday with a 10% coupon, found an elite from team FDOU lot-0806 175w and bought it. I got a 3yr warranty for $26 AR, that means I won't have to pay MS if it borks for anything other than RROD, the way this one did. Fired up CrackDown which froze with-in 10 minutes no matter what, and proceeded to play for hours, issue free=Problems solved.

Now I am just debating if I will send the premium to MS and pay to have the drive replaced, or sell it cheap with full disclosure about the bad DVD causing certain games to freeze up. May be someone who doesn't need it for XBL, will want it to mod, or just replace the drive and use it.

Funny, I read the topic title and said to myself "Gee, don't xbox360's tend to overheat? You've got a great cooling solution!"
