I just don't get it. It worked yesterday and today it doesn't work. The only thing I changed was I installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
And Framework 3.5 SP1.
-I have XP 32bit, SP3. 8800GTX. 4GB Ram. Q6600 2.4GHz.

The above were required because my GTA4 game was experiencing severe studdering problems and there are MANY reports that say this method fixes it. And guess what? IT DOES. I was playing without the controller and the game ran PERFECTLY.

I already tried over 12 archived nvidia drivers and nothing fixed it. But my Xbox 360 controller no longer works. Here is the process of how things happen:

First I uninstalled the Xbox360 Software, restarted my PC, and then installed them again - and restarted once more. The Xbox software IS loaded into Msconfig to boot on startup and was checked to make sure it was currently running during this process.

1. Both the receiver and controller are unplugged and turned off.
2. I plug the receiver into the high powered USB port in the back of the PC. The receiver light does not turn on.
3. I turn on the Xbox controller by pressing the center button. All 4 lights contine to blink for a few seconds, the lights then spin around in circles for a few seconds then go back to blinking.
4. I turn press the receiving button on the receiver. The light turns on and off, The xbox360 controller lights are now showing the diagonal lights only flickering on and off. A few seconds later, all 4 lights on the controller begin to blink again and the light on the receiver turn off.
5. I then press the receiving button on the receiver and the small (upper) receiving button on top of the 360 controller, in hopes they sync with each other. The lights spin in circles on the 360 controller for about 1-2 seconds and then all 4 lights begin to blink, the instant those 4 lights begin to blink - the receiver light turns off. The light turning off on the receiver using this method is MUCH faster than the previous method. As soon as those 4 lights begin to blink, the lights turn off on the receiver. The controller lights continue to blink.
6. I try 2 new back (high powered) USB ports with nothing but the keyboard and mouse installed and the same thing happens.

I own a 360 controller too but haven't run into any problems. There's a few things you can try though that might help. First, when you uninstall and reinstall the drivers from the CD I assume you have, make sure the controller is UNPLUGGED. Secondly, maybe try a different USB port and restart your comp. Lastly, to check if your comp is reading your controller at all (note this is for vista but I think it's in XP too) go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, then click Gamepads. Have your controller plugged in and hit properties, it will bring up a box with all the buttons, and just click a few and move the joystick and if they light up its registering correctly. Then it might just be the game not seeing it.

If its the games .ini files not preferring the controller, you'll need to find the default config files in the game folder, it will be a notepad doc, and just change whatever line that says "UseJoystick=false" to "UseJoystick=true" or whatever line that may say joystick or gamepad. (whew that turned out to be a longer response than I planned )

Racing or maybe playing xbox 360 ported games?

I have the wireless Xbox 360 controller working on my PC. It is very nice to games racing games and I just played all of X-Men Origins Wolverine with it.

Obviously I would never play a FPS with the controller...

I was hoping the play & charge cable would let me use the wireless controller on the PC (had to get it anyway since I bought a used controller and it came with the rechargable battery). Oh well.

why not?
I've been using it ever since it first came out and love it.

Back to the OP's problem: Make sure you unplug any other USB devices and try again.
One of the USB drivers may be in conflict with the 360.

Try a different usb port? I have my wireless receiver plugged into the front ports on my PC. It doesn't need a "high power" or USB2.0 port.
