It just isn't wise to sell off your Xbox early until they confirm such emulation exists. It might not even be wise do it until the Xbox2 is actually out and people can test how well the emulation really works.
It's an intriguing though, and although technically difficult - it is theoretically possible. Apparently Sony is going to be taking a similar tact, with the PS3 partially soft-emulating the PS2's hardware. An interesting point of note, is that MS *did* buy Connectix's VirtualPC emulator... perhaps that codebase would be useful to emulate an X86-based XBox on a future machine, when re-compiled for the Power arch.?
I wouldn't sell it though. Even when the newer console manages to play a prev-gen console's games, there are always a few games that don't work right. Unless storage space is an issue, I just keep collecting consoles and have them all hooked up.
