The XBox is a standard PC. Everything should be replaceable.

EDIT: Sound, ethernet and graphics are going to be onboard, so you won't be able to pull them out. But you should be able to replace or upgrade CPU, RAM, HD. The DVD is likely to be a slimline drive (the kind used in notebooks) so any replacement drive that will still fit the case is likely to be wicked expensive.

SHOULD be replacable. Who knows, considering it's a Microsoft product. You might have to register within 14 days and have a security guard stand by your XBox to make sure you don't tinker with it.

I dont know if microsoft would want people changin hardware. Consoles are good for developers because everyone has the SAME configuration through out. Changing parts would defeat that purpose. I am sure the HD's definately would be upgradable. I guess we cant tell untill we get our hands on one.

The fun part about screwing with the XBox is that we don't care what Microsoft wants! Of course Microsoft wants people to buy an XBox and use it as-is and buy a ton of accessories and games to go along with it. But the only way they can legally oblige people to do so is if they can get contractual obligations from everyone who purchases an XBox, John Hancock on a piece of paper style.

Clickthrough license agreements are meaningless because you could perform the hardware upgrade before you even turned the console on and had to go through any clickthrough crap. And one wonders how the console public would react to a clickthrough agreement on their consoles.

Besides which, how would Microsoft know who upgraded their XBox? The license or contract would be completely unenforcable.

Lucid, you don't make any sense at all. So what if it may be possible to replace the components in the xbox? Would you do it if Sony came out with something similar to the xbox where they've taken off the shelf hardware and put something together? What if you changed something out of the xbox and it stops working?

And no you're not required to buy any games or accessories. Hell you're not even required to buy accessories or games for your PC, playstation or whatever. You're not even required to buy the xbox if you don't want to. It's all up to you really. MS puts out the product they don't make you buy anything and neither does Sony for that matter. You just stay with your PC and be happy.
