Even with 800 ping you can still play alot of games on live. Catan, Uno, Street Fighter and all the throwbacks. I'm sure even Forza2 might run ok.

It really depends on what games you want. I think the Playstation systems themselves always have the largest/best selection of games (by the end of their lifetime). The 360 is doing very well, though...much more so than the original Xbox.

Basically, if you're into Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Killzone (sequel could be very good) and a few other PS exclusives (well, MGS4...very slight chance it won't be), you'll want at PS3.

360 also has a lot of good games coming out, but I'm not sure if it has as many big exclusives (aside from Halo 3 and such). Yeah, if you want Halo...you know where to go. The 360 is very centered around Live, so you'll probably not use the 360's full potential.

I'd recommend the PS3, personally.

At that point, he'd be better off waiting until later next year for a PS3 as none of these games are going to be ready anytime soon. Probably get a price drop in between now and then.

Again, look at the list of exclusives the 360 has releasing in to this upcoming holiday season and none of them are Live dependent:
BioShock, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Naruto, Alone in the Dark, Splinter Cell:Conviction. Plus third-party games like Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Army of Two, and GTAIV.

That doesn't include exclusives already out like GoW, Lost Planet, Forza 2, Viva Pinata, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Ghost Recons 1 & 2, Dead Rising, Saint's Row, Crackdown, Condemned, and more. Plus all the 3rd party games like Guitar Hero 2, Dance Dance Revolution, etc. All provide great off-line playing experiences.

Not every game for every taste but the 360 is doing something the original Xbox didn't...provide a wide variety of games. About the only thing it is lacking on right now is platformers and party games (Fusion Frenzy 2 is blech).

Dont get a PS3 if you dont wanna be connected to the web with it... after all, they release a new firmware like every week or two that you'll be missing out on.

He said he does have a connection, so he could download it from the website if necessary.

The updates are only once a month anyway. And if a game requires a certain firmware, it's included on the disc.

Wii60 FTW!#!! ;)

They pretty much complement each other perfectly - the Wii pretty much only has party games and platformers at this point, and the 360 has all the games that need to look pretty (RPGs, FPS, etc).

It depends on who you talk to. Some CSR's will tell you that they'll only pay shipping and send a box if you're in your first 30 days. Most people have had to cover that themselves lately.

Also, once you receive a refurbed 360, you're only given a 90-day warranty unless you had bought an extended warranty.

I have never heard or ever seen a 360 ever scratch up a disc ever!

Apparently there's a class action lawsuit going on for scratched discs.
only idiots who move their console while the disc is inside (or even worse move it WHILE its on) have that problem. my 360 hasn't scratched a single disc in 6 months (time i've had it) but then again i don't move it while its on like a moron.

OP. get the 360 and get RS6 vegas.

On PS3 side, expect these this year:

Ninja Gaiden Sigma*
EyeCreate*
Lair*
Heavenly Sword*
The Eye of Judgment*
Folklore*
Hot Shots Golf 5*
Ratchet & Clank*
Assasin's Creed
Army of Two
GTAIV
Warhawk* (online)
GTAIV
Haze (timed exclusive)
SOCOM: Confrontation* (online?)
Eight Days*
Stanglehold (contains HD movie of Hard Boiled on blu-ray disc, which is exclusive)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune*
Ghost Recon 2 (more maps, weapons, missions)
Rainbow 6: Vegas
Guitar Hero 3

*=exclusive

This isn't the whole list of course. Also expect MGS4 in first quarter of 2008 and FFXIII and Gran Turismo sometime in 2008.

Xbox 360 is a great console, but it just depends on what kind of games appeal to you more. For me, PS3 games are more appealing, and I can play Bioshock and Alan Wake on my PC. I am not a fan of Halo (found first two games boring). Poor build quality didn't help either (I witnessed many ring of deaths from my friends).

Whatever floats your boat.

Not from the reports I've heard. We've been lucky enough not to have any scratched discs yet (knock on wood), but we HAVE had the disc get knocked out of alignment without any movement of the console. We had to use the pinhole to get it out.

Psuedo-exclusive? Xbox owners have already had two versions of Ninja Gaiden for a couple of years now. This is yet another update just for the PS3 now with the ability to play as a girl.

Wrong, there are several 360-reliability threads at ArsTechnica where experienced gamers (not slack-jawed yokels) mention disc scratching problems with 360's that were on a stable surface and not moved while in use.

The EU investigation is also not about people bumping 360's while in use.

You sound like the people who claimed that anyone who had the red rings of death must be at fault for not giving the 360 proper ventilation.

"Mine works, so any problems you have are your fault for misusing it!"

Nope, it's just a poorly manufactured system that badly needs a redesign. Good specs, good games, not so good reliability.

The design is fine it is just some of the parts on some of the systems. One kind of drive on the 360 can cause scratches....another kind doesn't. Some motherboards warp and cause the heatsink to come up. Others don't. The modders at Xbox-Scene have already been able to fix this with screws.

Quality Control is definitely an issue with some of MS's manufacturing partners.

i played the demo and it looks amazing...don't know how much the gameplay is similar, but the graphics are astounding.

Yea I was recently in a circut city where the demo 360 had the red rings of death. So if the demo units (thus those set up by microsoft to work) are having that problem then it is a general problem, not motion, not ventilation.

If I were to get a 360 I'd certainly get an instore extended waranty. Less hastle. The money does not matter all that much to me.

(I picked games likely to have good off-line gameplay)

Halo2's single player campaign was only 5 hours long, I wouldn't expect Halo 3's to be any better

Well, at least go online for the achievement and such. It really does add a whole new dimension to game playing when you're trying to beat your buddies or even just others in achievements.

It's the exact same game with updated graphics and the ability to play as the girl ninja. She also has a sidestory though I'm not sure how long it is.

Actually, nevermind, somebody just won a BBB case about this :)

MS is TELLING people that they will only get 90 days or the remainder of their warranty if you didn't pay, but there's nothing that backs that up in the contract. So you really are supposed to be getting a full year regardless of how the "repair" (used loosely considering nobody gets back their original) is handled.

Wait - what? I thought it is normal for a replaced product to only have the remainder of the original warranty. I don't believe it is normal for a warranty repair to "restart the clock" on the warranty. Do you have a link for this?

His actual letter to the BBB is a few pages back in that thread.

I still think the PS3 will have the best offline games(or best games period in a few years)...360 focuses a lot on Live.

You'll still get a great selection of games, though. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
