Xbox vs. PS2

I'm trying to decide between an Xbox and a PS2. Lots of games are made for both, and some are exclusive to one system only... like MGS 3: Snake Eater (PS2), Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), etc.

The games are going to sell me on a system.. not necessarily the technical specs of the system. I know the PS2 is a bit outdated, but it still performs well and has some killer games.

List any exclusive games you can think of that are kickass (Resident Evil 0 also comes to mind).. current games or upcoming (Resident Evil: Outbreak, Fable, Return of the King). Or just chime in and say why you prefer one system over the other.

Thanks!

PS: GameCube is not a choice right now, mostly cuz I want a system that has DVD movie support. And plus, a lot of games that are out for PS2 and Xbox also come out for the GC. GC's exclusive games are great (RE0, Wind Waker), but they are far & few between.

I had a PS 2 and I traded it in on a Xbox great trade although it cost a few bucks more but alot better games for any age.
Get HALO, I think it would have been as highly reguarded as Halflife if released on PC when it was suppose to before being bought out by M$.

Go to Gamestop and then you have 7 days if you get buyers remorse to return for a refund.

I'd get the PS2, most of the XBox games look really great but suck for gameplay or just aren't fun.

I think KOTR is really good, but I think it's coming out for PC pretty soon though. Same thing with GTA:VC, great game, but it's out for PC now.

I have a PS2 and I believe it's much better than the Xbox. There's only a couple of games on the Xbox that I really like, Halo being one of them. But the PS2 has Final Fantasy. :D That alone makes me buy my consoles.

Well, if games is your criteria (which it should be, despite all the fanboys), PS2 hands down. It has the most games, the most good games (it also has the most bad games), but by far the most choice. Most developers concentrate their efforts on the PS2 since it has the largest installed base, which means the Xbox/Gamecube ports of the same game aren't as good.

Personally, I think Nintendo's first party titles are the best out there, but as you said there aren't enough of them. I still bought a cube though.

I've found no compelling reason to own an Xbox...Halo is an awesome game, but didn't justify the purchase for me. And most of the other high rated Xbox games are ports that can be had on the PS2.

The Xbox has the best hardware, but as you said, it's all about the games.

check out IGN and you'll see the difference. Go to Reviews, then check out how many 9's and above for each. Not to mention a ton of those can be had for less than $20.

I'm surprised so many people voted Xbox...either they're kidding themselves, or they REALLY like Halo :)

Well, there's more than Halo.. here are some great games exclusive to Xbox: Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Full Spectrum Warrior.. I know these games aren't out yet, but they will be soon.. and they look really great. There are others I can't think of. Of course, I'll miss out on the PS2 exclusive titles (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Silent Hill 3, etc).. but I do plan on buying a PS2 in a 3-4 months.. so i suppose it doesn't matter too much. :)

PC gaming owns you all. I agree,

I never understand these threads. I honestly don't know how people can say that the XBOX has the best exclusive titles. I don't even think its close. Also, with that being said, I DO believe a case could be made for the cube.

Ok I had the same thoughts in my head when I was making the decision between the XBox and the PS2. What it came down to is which console is better for the future instead of the right now. Yes, the PS2 has a lot of games available right now (more than the XBox) but down the road I see the XBox having more good games available than the PS2. Here are the points that made up my mind and got me sold on the Xbox.

1) The PS2 has been out for a good couple of years now, coming up on almost 3 years now and the hardware is showing its age. Sony is going to have to release the PS3 eventually if they want to stay competitive. The XBox is the newer console on the block and I don't think it's been fully exploited as of yet insofar as its capabilities are concerned.

2) Built in HD. No more of this save to a memory card bullcrap, you just save it to a hard drive and don't worry about it. Plus the ability to have your own custom soundtracks in games that support it is very nice.

3) XBox Live is downright awesome. Microsoft planned this right and I have tons of fun online no matter which game I decide to play. Plus the ability to download new content (again something the PS2 CAN NOT DO) to games even if they aren't multi player online is pretty darn cool.

4) Some of Sony's old exclusive game publishers are beginning to publish games for the Xbox. One of the more notable ones is Rockstar games and it should be interesting to see what happens with them.

Yes it is all about the games but it has never been all about the exclusive games for me. Take Splinter Cell for example it was awesome on the XBox but just not as good on the PS2? Why? Because it couldn't handle the lighting engine in the game which was so VITAL to gameplay. There have been other games where similar things have happened, the PS2 just wasn't able to do as well with the same game. I can see this happening more and more in the future ESPECIALLY when developers start to use the HD more which the PS2 does not have. And yes before you add it in I know you can buy an add on HD but it's not something that is in every PS2 console so the game programmers can't always count on it being there.

its as easy as looking at the wall space retailers have alotted to each and also compare the installed base.
the ps2 has a far better selection of titles, many more exclusives and simply is the better system if you are interested in playing games.

I'd get the ps2. It has more games out and generally I find them more enjoyable than the xbox games. The xbox has had a few good ones, but not enough to sway me to buy one even with its supperior graphics.

I don't know....
somehow, for me XboX games feels like PC games (which I prefer to play on PC). So I'll get a PS2 for more 'console style' games.

My XBox has almost become a Capcom vs SNK 2:EO machine! That game + Live! = A FREAKIN' ADDICTION! I don't think I've been addicted to game a like this for a loooong time. But it would be anything if it weren't for online play (XBox Live!)! I wouldn't trade my XBox for anything....well if you gave me a million dollars, I'd take the money and go buy another XBox. ;)

PS2 has ALOT of title but I just can't find one I like that isn't already on the XBOx.

My suggestion to you is if you are really into Japanese RPGs and if you want to play older games like GTA3 buy a then PS2 but if you want to play games that have yet to be released go by the game that is being released first. Ninja Gaiden will most likely come out this year (November 18), MGS 3 and GTA 4 won't be coming out until next year, so buy the Xbox first and if Konami hasn't announced that MGS 3 will be coming to the Xbox by the time it is released buy a PS2(Killzone should be around the corner by then.).

If you do get an Xbox purchase as well Live if you can because it seems like more and more console games (not PC ports) will be online in the coming months. You will have games like Halo 2, Project Gothem Racing 2, Ninja Gaiden, Dead Or Alive Online, True Fantasy Live Online, Perfect Dark Zero, DOA Code Cronos and many other games that I can't think of right now on Live.

If you?re still not sure wait until after X03 and TGS, which are just a few weeks away, before making your decision.

The PS2 is hands down my top choice for secondary console of youg children :)

I own all three(four if you can't my Cubes once each), the PS2 has games mainly aimed at either very young gamers, or gamers with very, very, very limited capabilities. It seems to focus on FMV sequences where you push a button once in a while(FF, MGS), but don't worry too much about when you hit it or games where it is nigh impossible to fail or die(GTA XX, Max Payne etc). J&D, R&C and the like are good for the kids(my kids love them), but I haven't seen much of anything worth picking up for older gamers that isn't out on the other, better, systems. The XBox seems to have the best selection of upcoming games for the older players, and they offer some that have at least a reasonable challenge level. The Cube unfortunately is suffering from Nintendo "Sonyizing" games making them far too easy(Zelda, Metroid Prime etc) and aimed at the either ego challenged or just plain lousy gamers. Kind of sad that when a game comes out with a decent challenge, the reviewers slam it because it is more difficult then watching a movie(F-ZeroGX). They do have the best line up of titles for younger gamers hands down, and their titles seem to pack a bit more challenge then Sony's offerings, but it already is looking like the Cube's best titles are behind it. The Box's weakest point is that it has nothing for younger gamers at all. Blinx is mediocre at best and it is the strongest titled aimed at the younger gamers. I have one XBox- fifteen games, two GameCubes- 26 games(I have four kids ;) ), one PS2- four games.

Apparently people didn't read that the thread was about which platform has better exclusive titles. I don't think there is a single person who can argue that the XBOX has better exclusive titles than the PS2.

Best Overall Games that you will never see on another machine = GameCube
Most Exclusive Games that after several years usually make it to another platform or the PC = PS2
Best Graphics and Multiplayer = Xbox

It is this simple. I'm really liking the 6 games that I own for Gamecube. But I own like 40 games for PS2.

*Edit: Ben, I thought Metroid Prime was pretty hard :(. Well, the Mega Ridley or whatever his name was, was hard. Wind Waker has been pretty easy but very fun at the same time.
