Xbox running seti?

ive heard of some project too get linux too run on the xbox im wondering if anybody has any details on this ( i actually read it in computer gaming world )

the xbox has a stripped down P3 733mhz
64mb unified ram...
10gb hd
correct me if im wrong here
not a bad cruncher

if linux could run on an xbox im guessing xbox could load seti and crunch units

An MIT graduate came up with the hardware to work around the proprietary controller and software in place that stops an ordinary hard drive from talking to the motherboard. It is not something readily available now.

actually it has come *much* further than that.

SuSE Linux X-box install guide

because of it's standard Intel architecture the X-box linux install should run the linux client just like a computer, since the architecture was all that was preventing linux crunching on a PS2 (there is no client ported to it yet)

BTW... give a thorough look at xbox-linux.sourceforge.net before you consider doing it, read all the documentation... when i went back and took a look after replying to this thread it appears that their documentation for a Debian install looks far simpler with much less hot swapping involved.

And do realize that it is very important to backup that x-box HDD, as far as i can tell your x-box will become a ful time computer once the linux install is finished, there doesnt appear to be any LILO or GRUB system for dual booting between linux and gaming. looks like it will require a HDD restore to be able to play games again to me, so definitely get an idea of what are you doing by reading all the info they have there

EDIT : bleh on further review i found this in the FAQ:Will I still be able to play games once Linux is on my hard disk? ... That depends on the solution you choose. If you run Linux through the XBE bootloader on an Xbox with a modchip, there will be a software-based dual boot solution. It will also be possible to run Linux from a CD without having your hard disk modified at all.

it all looks pretty good to go to me, but id still back that HDD up 😉

LOL, im just a friendly team BBR guy who was bored and reading a few teams boards, and you guys have lots of friendly helpfull guys who stop in at our boards, and i would have been remiss by not reciprocating with what little knowledge i have 😉

I may just try this it looks like a good learning experiance...
looks tough though =P
and considering ive only ran linux on my PC 1 time, madrake 7.2 for about 3 hours and deleted it for being a pain.

i predict much cursing involved in this project
