XBox or PS2 for Driving Games?

I currently have a Gamecube, but I am disappointed with the racing/driving titles out for it. I long to play a (somewhat) realistic racing game. I enjoy playing GT3 on the PS2 with my nephew (which makes me lean toward the PS2) but am intrigued by the XBox and titles like Project Gotham 2. Other types of titles I would be interested in would be sports and FPS titles, but this is secondary to racing games. Opinions?

That's a tough one...

GT3 is the king of driving games. And I think it's safe to assume that GT4 will carry on the tradition. While PGR2 is also an excellent game, it's no Gran Turismo.

As for sports, the Xbox reigns. Mostly because Xbox Live is head and shoulders above PS2's online capabilities.

And with shooters such as Halo, Rainbow Six 3, Counterstrike, etc... the PS2 really doesn't have anything to compete. (Btw, RS3 and Counterstrike are Live enabled... As will be Halo 2. 🙂 )

With the Xbox you'd also get Midtown Madness & Aphex. As well as Rallispec Challenge & Moto GP2.

Wingnutz has it down pretty good.

GT3 rocks, best racing game out. GT4 is soon, and that'll rock even more.

PGR2, and SegaGT are pretty good, both with Online play, are pretty damn good racing games. I think those two are both good enough to satisfy most racing buffs though.

One thing that wasn't mentioned, I also like the Xbox Controller for racing far better than the PS2s. The triggers make driving so much better to control, and the graphics are much crisper on the Xbox.

Very good point about both the controller and the graphics.

Audio is better on the Xbox, as well. Especially if you have a 5.1 system surrounding you. 😉

Not to mention your own tunes ripped to the system cranking instead of the same three songs played over and over again on most racing games.

Oh god, the Soundtrack for GT3 was HORRIBLE. I don't want to hear SnoopDogg while racing. The best song on there was GoldFinger - 99 Red Balloons.

GT1 and GT2 soundtracks were awesome, I'm still not sure what sony was smoking when they came up with the soundtrack for GT3 though.

I don't know how many of you have actually used the PS2 Logitech Wheel, but its not that great. I prefer playing GT3 with the PS2 controller because I'm not messing with a steering wheel thats moving all over the place.

GT is an awesome game. I prefer it to Gotham and Sega GT in all realistic aspects. However, when it comes to diversity and content, I'd much rather play Project Gotham. I've easily spent as much time playing PGR and I have GT3.

The PS2. Why? Because the Xbox controller sucks for driving games.
Really? Why do you say that?

I think the analog triggers on the Xbox controller are much better for precise accelleration and braking.

Yes, that new Logitech wheel is going to rock... I heard it's going to have 2.5 turns lock-to-lock to more properly replicate RL steering.

Comparing GT3 to XBox's offerings is tough. I like the rally driving dynamics of CMR3 and Rallisport Challenge equally (I love rally games) for good driving dynamics replication, it's tough to beat GT3. I haven't found another console game that comes close... most of my autoX buds are GT3 freaks.

Xbox for arcade (several)
PS2 for sim (gt3/4)

Playing online? If you like EA games, they are online for ps2 only..personally I prefer sega(hockey/football) which are xbox live! enabled
FPS games? Socom 2 for PS2 is extremely popular, but I have never played it..Counter-Strike is on PC.. so unless you prefer the controller...

but..the xbox seems to have more popular releases coming out soon, such as rallisport challenge 2(first one was awesome) halo 2, nhl rivals(ok, maybe just me)

and the only thing I can think of for ps2 is gt4, but gt4 should be enough to justify buying a ps2, which I will probably do..

Project Gotham is more GT3-type simulation or NFS-type Arcade game?

Thanks for the input everyone....the PS2 is tempting for GT3-4, but XBox is starting to look better with the online potential and graphics.

I really do enjoy the Xbox Hardware over the PS2. Higher quality Sound, including your own custom soundtrack, online racing, better controller, crisper graphics, practicaly unlimited space for saved games, replays, ghosts, etc....

SegaGT is like GT3, on a smaller scale, buy your car, upgrade it, etc etc. Fills the GT3 gap pretty good. SegaGT Online is coming out this week, lots of extra cars, tracks, and online play, very excited about that. PGR2 came out today, I enjoyed the first.

GT3 is still the king of racing games, but I do believe SegaGT and PGR2, coupled with the extra benefits of owning the Xbox (mentioned above), really fill the gap by not having GT3 though.

I have both a PS2 and an Xbox in my house, Xbox first, then we got a PS2 not too long ago. I was completely satisfied with just playing SegaGT.

I have Gamecube, and while I love it I just find that titles like Mario Cart and F-Zero don't fill my need for a "real" (read somewhat realistic) driving game. I still find myself busting out Test Drive Lemans on my Dreamcast when I want to "drive."
