Xbox One Teardown

I'm sure many of you knew it by now, but mildly interesting that the fan sucks air from the inside and pushes it up sucking air up through the heatsink, instead of down to the heatsink.

At least, upgrading the HDD when bigger ones come out should be easy enough with a firmware flasher like before. Too bad it voids the warranty. =(

it seems that ms consoles have always been a lot simpler in design internally than any of the sony consoles (except psx). it looks like they are continuing that with this as well.

Easy to do when its much bigger. Kind of reminds me of the engine bay of a 1980's american truck vs a modern day japanese car.

Bigger console and an external PSU, which is why there's so much space inside. Otherwise, they're about the same.

The fan is bigger than the PS4's. Should be very quiet when running.

No wonder it is so damn big. You could fit a cat in there. As a ps4 buyer I do worry a bit if it went too far to the other extreme, though. That Xbox can is frickin huge.

yeah for sure i'm sure they are trying to keep it cool in there after rrod fiasco. but in general their consoles have always been built very basic like that where you basically pop off the top of the case and everything is exposed. i personally don't really care what a console looks like for the most part, especially now that i have it out of sight in a closet. ps4 looks much sleeker than i had expected though. in person it looks really nice. the pics didn't do it justice.

I think from an aesthetics standpoint, this console was just slammed together. I doubt much went into the design other than "this is NOT going to melt like the last one."

Kudos for a lesson well learned, but Sony showed that the hideous space-sucking power brick can not only be fit inside, but can be fit inside a console that is 2/3 the size.

Yea that sounds logical. They had 100+ revisions of the controller, but decided to forgo any R&D into the design of the shell.

You have NO idea how many VCR's from the 1980's they had to look at before they found one they liked.

Wow, pretty impressive thermal design on this compared to the 360. I guess they learned their lesson. :hmm:

It's really hard to do worse than Microsoft did on the original 360 design. I can't imagine that Microsoft would've kept the genius that chose to use a 40mm fan. 😛

I prefer this sort of design. Just a nice, simple, well-ventilated little box. Well, except this doesn't quite hit the "nice" part with all that plastic everywhere.

They spent a few dollars on it bu seriously the thing is VERY big and it is ugly. I don't get the love for the ps4's appearance, though. The angled front looks like a hideous house from the 70's. the first gen 360 was very pretty with its subtle curve on the front.

I disagree, I think the PS4 looks awesome. It's gorgeous in the cabinet with the rest of my stuff.

I am not a fan of the PS4's angled design. It is like it is trying too hard to look modern. I think the Xbox One looks better, but I am partial to black boxes. I'm the same with computer cases as well. Give me a steel box big enough to hold 3 radiators and I'm happy; no windows, no lights, none of that garbage.

My PC case is a giant metal Lian-Li box with no bells and whistles, so I am with you there, but I like the look of the PS4 and it fits in better with my receiver and other things in there.

i agree 100%. when i first saw pics of it and saw videos of it, i thought it looked retarded.

but as soon as i pulled it out of the box my mind changed. and now that it's sitting on my a/v rack it just looks sleek as hell up there.

LOL you're going to look at that monstrosity and tell me it represents ANYTHING other than a guarantee that it won't overheat? BITCH please

Again, I point to my PS4. I'm not saying it's a deal breaker, but that huge power brick SUCKS. And if Sony could get theirs into a more powerful box with 2/3 the space, then MS could have plopped theirs int there, too. Along with a VHS player.

Great use of my name lol 🙂 Back to the topic - everyone is bemoaning this huge power brick...which will probably be on the floor behind your TV stand where NO ONE can see it. It's a non-issue, just like the 360 was.

For the overheating - irregardless of the size, that was a design flaw on the 360. Less compact components and more "Oh we need to be first to market, screw it". Could the One be a bit smaller? Sure, but the black box looks and matches more with the rest of my AV equipment than the PS4 does.

yeah the people crying about the power brick are pretty funny because it is really a non-issue for most people who will hide it on the ground somewhere behind their entertainment stand.
