XBOX LIVE Subscription Question

My 12 months on Xbox Live comes to an end in September and I need to renew my subscription. I see 12+1 cards and other subscription cards on Ebay and on the forums here. I was wondering if these cards are only good for new Live accounts or could the codes be used to renew my subscribtion to Live for another year?
 
They can be used to renew your subscription. There's an option to enter the code on the card.
 
ok but on ebay I see some of the cards say

"This item works with NEW XBOX LIVE ACCOUNTS ONLY! WILL NOT work by extending your existing Xbox Live Gold or Silver Membership. (Must create new Windows Live ID using new email)"

why is that??

Hmm perhaps those were from the original Xbox?
 
I read more about it and it seems promotional live cards cant be used to extend service but can only be used to start a new live account. Now I just need to figure out how to tell the difference before I buy one. Or just look for one that says will work for extending accounts....
 
Every time I get a 48-hour trial or whatever with new games I add it onto mine. it may only be 2 days, but that's 2 free days 😀

I usually forget about my account expiring and wait till the last minute. i end up just paying full price with my CC each time.

at first I would have agreed, but after using Live, its awesome. the ease at which to chat and set up games with your friends couldn't be easier. and its only $30 for 13 months at buy.com

It's not nuts if you've ever used the system...it is well worth the $4 a month.

Yep. I am normally pretty cheap but I don't mind paying for XBL at ALL. There's a ton of content and it's just so damn easy to use.
