xbox live "network"

ok, so the deal is i can play on live just like everyone else but if my friend creates an (open) game it wont let me accept the invite and connect.
any ideas?
 
You might have better luck in the console gaming forum. I don't know much about it but I think it has something to do with network address translation- NAT.

If you aren't using a router this should not be an issue for you. It may be a problem on your buddies side however.

Spot on. Most consumer routers have port forwarding which can be used to resolve this issue.

Not really. layer3 NAT can cause all sorts of problems depending on the protocol. I don't know what kinds of protocols xboxlive uses but it's totally normal for NAT to cause problems with all kinds of L7 protocols.

I've never delved into it but I am not surprised that MS has problems with NAT. If I could reach through the intarweb and smack them I would. They don't like standards, they develop in a vacuum.

Meanwhile I love my xbox live.
