I have an xbox and a cable modem for the ol' pc. I know I gotta get the Live starter kit. I need a router, right? How to choose a good one? Do I need any other hardware or cabling?

TIA

Then any SOHO router should do just fine, as long as it has enough LAN ports to support the number of devices you want to connect (at least two from what you've mentioned so far).

I use an SMC7004ABR (4 port) with no problems.
Netgear and Linksys make comparable models.

I'd simply look for a Hot Deal on one of those.
Once the router is properly configured for your ISP, the Xbox should automatically get an IP address from the router, and you should be good to go.

You'll need a straight-through CAT5 cable to connect your Xbox to a LAN port on the router, and another to connect your PC to another LAN port on the router.
You should have one CAT5 cable already that you can use to connect your cable modem to the WAN port of the router.

KIM that some SOHO routers come with CAT5 cables, and some don't....might help keep your from overbuying cables.

The 7004ABR has a VERY nice feature...auto-crossover detection on all ports.
You don't have to worry about crossover or straight-through cabling.
IMHO, *ALL* SOHO equipment should offer this feature.

BTW: Be VERY careful typing in your Gamertag. If you misspell it...you are stuck with it!

Thanks Tallgeese. Is there a max distance that a coax cable can be before you get signal loss? My cable modem is about 15' from the xbox.

put your router next to your cable modem, and your cable modem closest to your nearest cable outlet, and run cat5/network cable to your Xbox...

Coax? You'll want to use good quality Category 5 cables, which use a twisted pair media. The max distance on any single run of Cat 5 is about 300 feet.

BTW: Kanalua's post suggests a proper layout for your stuff.
BTW2: Be sure to check out the BIG LIST - Xbox Deals thread if you haven't already.

BTW: KIM that Unreal currently has some pretty bad lag problems. A patch is forthcoming...but no hard release date yet.
BTW2: I saw both MA and UC tonight at my local Sam's Club for less than $30. In fact, MA was less than $25!
BTW3: Which you would already know if you had check the BIG LIST! :D

Yeah I mean the cable that comes in is coax, it has a screw type connector to my cable modem. Will this work? There's one output for an RJ-45 connector to my LAN card.

Does it go like this? Incoming line--->cable modem--->router--->PC & xbox

sorry for the dumb questions, I'm computer-smart, network-dumb.

p.s. I have perused the list, but cheap games don't matter if I can't figure out how to hook this up :)

Setup should be like this:

cable outlet on wall
||
||
RG-6 coax cable (6' or less in length)
||
||
cable modem (modem should be placed fairly close to outlet...6' or so)
||
||
Cat5 cable (length is your call)
||
||
Router (your call on router placement)
||''''''||
||''''''||
Two Cat 5 cables (length is your call)
||''''''||
||''''''||
One goes to Xbox, the other goes to PC

BTW: Yep...the setup you edited into your last post looks right.

Dude, sweet diagram. :D:eek:

You should enjoy Live, by the way. Excellent. Unreal does have some bad lag problems, a rent for me at best until they fix the problems. It should retail for $25 at most stores now, though, as mentioned earlier.

Let us know your gamertag, and don't screw up on it!

The odds of messing something up increase dramatically the more times you're warned :) Now what would have been a simple exercise in text entering will become a grueling ordeal--click click 'omg I remember what those ATOT guys said, I will feel so stupid if I mess this up' typo enter "oh sh!t!!!!"

Hey now...no cracks about my drawing. Tough to make a decent network design without the proper tools :p

Agreed...and for most folks I think MA offers the most bang for the buck as far as shoot-em-up action. GR is quite good over Live too, but a very different type of game (more planning and tactics)
Let us know your gamertag, and don't screw up on it!
Be sure and send me your Gamertag and the Livegames you have, and I'll add you to the BIG LIST - Xbox Live Gamertags thread here in OT.

Just ask LeStEr about the heartache of keying in your Gamertag too quickly.

He will forever after be known on Xbox Live as "MallFoley."

BTW: And he knows I'm not making fun of him by bringing this up, either...don't ya my brother? :(
BTW2: Be sure and play a bit of the single player missions in MA before getting on Live with it. The SP campaign is the best way to familiarize yourself with the controls and the different Mech types.
BTW3: When you finish the SP campaign you unlock additional Mechs you can use on XBL.

One question tho...anyone else having a problem getting on Xbox Live right now?
Did they announce some maintenance or anything.

T-shooter tests complete just fine.
But trying to sign on in MA...nothing.

Small Office/Home Office.

Used to describe a certain level of networking equipment, both from the perspective of functionality and cost.

wait a minute! do I really need a router? can't I just go right from the modem to the xbox? it would be a bit of a hassle having to switch the cable every time from pc to xbox but it might be worth not having to buy more hardware.
