Xbox Live Account Hacked?

So I believe my XBL account has been hacked.

1- Received two emails from Microsoft thanking me for my purchase of 4,000 MS points (8,000 total) on 10 January. I didn't purchase anything on 10 January because I was on a flight from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt.

2- Received an email from EA thanking me for playing FIFA 12, which I do not own. Haven't played a FIFA game since like World Cup '98.

Contacted Microsoft via email but haven't gotten anything back yet. Went and changed my password on my XBL account as well. Will probably have to call but I don't really want to spend $2 a min while I'm put on hold for 20 minutes.

Wow, no kidding. I one of my soldiers had the same thing happen to him but it looks like this is a whole on outbreak.

Happened to a friend, I think they will lock down your gamertag for 2-4 weeks while they investigate it.
He wasnt' able to play online or do anything until they were done. Really sucks.

Holy shit, I'm glad I let my Xbox Live Gold membership lapse. Never paying another dime for that again.

Happened to me also. I hadn't used my console in a couple of months when it happened. I had one $49.99 charge go through but my bank blocked the $70 one. My bank refunded my money and Microsoft confirmed my account was hacked. They gave me one extra month of live gold and 3000 MS points for my trouble.

This is why I only use prepaid cards, and the MS points in my account are from Bing Rewards so i'm not really out anything if mine gets hacked.

I've read alot about this hack but I still don't get how it works. Do the victims (accidentally) give out their credentials?

That is what I want to know...especially considering the below. Hacked after even two months of non-usage?

My thought is that you may have had your credentials stolen elsewhere and the same e-mail also had your Live account tied to it.

there is some phishing xbl related sites that are used. my brother got hacked and i got some message on xbl from his account about signing up for this facebook-like website that would be tied to my xbl account. as soon as i clicked on the link i knew it was a phishing scam as it asked you to "log in" to your xbl account through their site.

and my brother didn't send me the xbl message. pretty sure it was automatically sent to me once he had signed up to the site. i told him to immediately change his password.

prior to that he had also had his account hacked, and fifa was also his last played game.

I'm still trying to figure out how mine got hacked. I'm usually very careful with my accounts and passwords and sites I go to. The last games played for me wasn't FIFA but Madden 12 and MW3, neither of which I own.

Playing FIFA has nothing to do with it. The hack is just to get you to transfer points, I believe to buy in-game assets in FIFA. Unless this is a true hack (read: they penetrated MS security and stole accounts), it's kind of appalling how many seemingly smart people are getting phished.

Did your Gamertag or any other Internet handle double as your windows live password? If so, that's the point of entry.

No, no way. I did get a bizarre message from one of my friends (gamefire.com/[gamertag]) but it looked suspicious so I never went near it.

UPDATE:

After about 4 days, my account is back online. MS has refunded me the $100 that was stolen, and unlocked my account.

Went ahead and changed my password again. Just to be sure.
