Xbox lightgun question

I've been wanting to get a lightgun and house of the dead 3 for my xbox for some time now. Since they are cheap I've decided now is the time. My question is do lightguns work properly with all kinds of tv's? I think I remember reading an article a while ago about them not working with LCD tv's, am I right or wrong, if I'm right does the same apply for plasma screens? I have a 42 inch panasonic and I just don't want to buy it if I'm going to have to use the controller to play.
