Xbox keeps locking up! Any ideas?

I've had my Xbox for about a year now and lately it's been locking up on me. It usually happens w/ the games like this for example. I'll be playing World Series Baseball or NCAA football and the announcers will not be heard. That is basically a warning sign. Then I can hear the hard drive get loud and fade in and out. It isn't long before my Xbox just completely freezes. This really pisses me off when I'm spending hours on a game and then can't save it. It usually happens when I pause it for a long time. It also occasionally happens on DVD's, but not as often. Sometimes it can't even read the DVD. Is there something I can do to fix this? Anyone know of a good cleaning kit or something? Any suggestions or experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

Do you put it on carpet? I know it helped to put playstations on a 1'x1' peice of tile or something like that. Have you tried using a regular dvd cleaning kit?

Call microsoft and see if they will replace it for free (unlikely but they might or might do it for cheap).

Also, might want to check out some xbox forums for ideas like xboxaddict.com

I haven't tried a regular DVD player cleaning kit yet, but I may get one tomorrow. What do you guys think the problem is?.... My guess is the lens is either dirty or scratched somehow.

I'd make sure and eliminate any possible heat issues before trying a cleaning kit.

If you don't have a scratched lens before using one of those kits, you can almost be assured of having one AFTER.

My system does seem to get a bit warm after being on for an hour or so. Is this normal? Any other way to check for heat issues?

* Make sure its NOT directly on carpet.
* Make sure it has a good amount of ventilation (at least 4-5" of clearance on each side).
* Point a fan on it while playing. See if the lockups still happen.

i vote for this...if locking still occurs...then maybe you can enclose it around flammable materials...let it burn yer house down, scam yer insurance company, and sue Microsoft...dont forget to be mildly burned...will get ya more of a settlement in court.

seriously...all of the above is NOT recommended except the original quote!

Ah Ha! I will try the 2nd two methods. As of now my console is in an entertainment center and only has about 2 to 3 inches of space on either side. Thanks for the heads up.

If those do not work for you, just take it back to your local Wal-Mart and exchange it. They'll take anything back. Just tell them you got it for your birthday and it doesn't work. Exchange it and get one of the new ones with the 2 free games with it. Piece of cake.

Your console would probably feel more than a BIT warm if you've got a heat issue, but it's prolly still worth checking out.
