XBox hard drive question

I'm looking for a couple of hard drives in the For Sale Forum here. Someone wondered if I would consider some pulled Xbox 8 gig drives. His statement says "I have 5 xbox hard drives ( unlocked )"

I know very little about Xboxes or their drives. Does whatever it takes to "unlock" them, have anything to do with updating or changing the firmware, or is it just clearing some sort of partition lock? Would this drive now detect like any normal drive when it is plugged in to the mobo, or do you need to manually set the drive geometry in the bios? Would there be anything to be concerned with about these drives and how/where they were previously used?
