I got an xbox recently and noticed you can unlock achievements in game that add to your gamerscore. Does your gamerscore actually do anything or is it simply for bragging rights?

Seriously, I've played games I had no interest in just to get the achievement points. They're utterly pointless yet throughly addicting.

it is the most pointless thing that games should have.

Like all the GTA games always have the 100% finished in game. And to get 100% you have to do EVERYTHING. Achievements are the same thing, something for you to try to get while playing the game. Some games it works better than others.

I don't care so much for overall gamerscore, but having them for each game is fun.

Case in point: I just spent a week trying to complete the full game speed run of Braid for the achievement. I wouldn't have even bothered with it otherwise.

To me, the achievements are a way of letting me know I've gotten my money's worth for the game and when to stop playing it. Once I collect as many acheivements that I feel I want, I know I can put it away/trade it/sell it.

I'm not into the whole achievement thing but it's good for people who make games as people will buy cheap games just to get more achievements.

Achievements are the best thing to happen to console gaming this generation. They've gotten me to play games MUCH more than usual just to get those stupid little points. The thing is that I don't even really care about my total gamerscore, but I still love getting those little pop-ups when I "achieve" something. Makes me feel important. :p

I'm not much into doing that, but if I have a choice between a PS3 or the 360 version of a game.... I go with the 360 to get achievements.

And because of Xbox Live.

And because of the controller.

Wow, same here. I've actually thought about this before, and I think it's because they aren't online or anything where you can easily compare them and show them to others at any time. I only look at my achievements online.

"For his own good, tell Bruce Lee and the Karate Kids none of us are carrying automatic weapons. Because here - in this country... it don't add inches to your dick. You get a life sentence for it."

Errm...anyway, pretty much just adds inches to your Johnson.

Yep, I agree. It gets me to play the games more, and enjoy them more, in ways I wouldnt before.

Its fun to compare with friends, great to see what others are playing, etc.

The only downside is that once I've got most of the achievements, I feel like I'm finished with the game, and I should be playing games in which theres still stuff to unlock. I guess thats what they want.

Its like I want to play left 4 dead and GTA 4 more, but I dont have a reason to, and theres all these other unplayed games on my shelf, and my friend is 100 points ahead of me again....

Still though, I'd be playing my Wii and PC a LOT more if it had 360 style achievements. I was glad the PC version of fallout had GFW Live just for the achievements, otherwise I surely would have bought the 360 one.

Same here. I don't give a flying F about PS3 trophies right now. Maybe in the future if they enhance somehow, I'd like it more, but it takes forever to load to see your trophies, they are hard to compare with your friends, and just plain unappealing (all relative to xbox achievements).

I just beat a game, I should be selling it off but there's another achievement or two I have to get first :p

One thing I forgot to mention, two or so year ago they did a promo where if you increased your gamescore by X amount before a certain date you got some free stuff. I think it was 1500 points and you got the XBLA game Contra, 3000-5000 you got that + other stuff, and 5000+ you got two or three games plus more stuff. They need to do that again.

Apparently Sony is adding the ability to view your trophies from their site tomorrow.
