I call BS on that one. If that was the only issue then it would be simple to overcome. Read it normal and flip bits.

Not to mention that the xbox reads regular dvds and cds.

from what I've read on the subject, saturn is right. The DVD drive on the xbox is made to read the disks in the opposite way that normal PC drives do. The way people get xbox games onto their PC's is that they ftp into their xbox and read the data straight from the xbox's dvd drive.

here is a page about a new project that is trying to emulate xbox games on the PC.

There is a functional Dreamcast emulator though. :Q

And nearly every console has an emulator that will run on dreamcast :). Gameboy, Genesis, SMS, SNES, NES, MAME, Playstation, even turbograffix16 (but that one sucks). I think the only thing not available is the n64, PS2, xbox & gamecube. I have seen everything else. Hell, Even Half-Life is on the Dreamcast :)

If it's so simple, please show me the error of my ways. I'll wait.

All the bits are backwards, including the TOC. You can't force a drive to read a disc with a malformed TOC, it just won't work.

CD/DVD drives have a bit more logic than a floppy drive. You can't just 'dump all the data' off a disc. Believe me, I've tried.

yeah, in general it takes a few years. the ps2 emulator is close, they can get title screens of lots of games, while psx is nearly perfect at this point.

i wouldn't expect to see the xbox emulator until the end of next year.

but feel free to get out there and start messing with it, maybe you'll be the one to crack it!

Taken from the forums from Cxbx emulator:

To get the XBE files out of your retail game you must either; A)Have the hacked DVD-ROM firmware which enables your PC DVD-ROM player to read Xbox DVDs, or B) Use your modded Xbox to dump the game itself.

The DVD firmware is specific on what DVD Drive you have. There is not universal firmware that will work on all DVD Drives. Chances are there is not hacked firmware for your drive. Do not ask us where to get it, because more than likely we don't know. Only specific drives have this special type of firmware available... Generally specific models of Samsung. Even with the hacked firmware you still have to modify the drive my soldering a few connections.
