I'm thinking of buying one off of the local craigslist and he tells me he hasnt used it much and that it was purchased in 2003. Should I be worried about it dying on me? What are your experiences? My Launch day PS2 died on me last year. I'm hoping something like this is uncommon with XBOXs.

Who cares? If it breaks you get to pay them even more money for a second one. It does them a lot more good than you; you'll never have a Ferrari and a beachfront mansion, but you can help others toward that end :D Go for it dude

I guess the xbox could last for years and years. Its possible the hard drive could crap out but thats really it.

I've had my xbox for 1 year, PS2 for 2 years, Dreamcast for 4 years, Sega Saturn since 95 and they all work like a charm. You'll never know if they are gonna crap out on you. If the harddrive or dvd drive were to mess up though you could probably replace them yourself for cheap.

...and ignore Gurck.

I'm shocked your PS2 lasted this long. I am guessing you didn't use it as much as most. Anyway the Xbox also had major problems with launch systems and disc read errors but since it was made in 2003 most all the problems was fixed and I think you should be fine. But unless your getting a good deal I would just get one new. Or just wait till Nov and get the new Xbox 360 if you got the money.

Actually I played that PS2 so much and left it on all night many a time (those GT3 endurance races take some time ;)) that I suppose it is rather unbelieveable that it lasted a while. The deal is 150 for the XBOX, 2 S Controllers, and Splinter Cell - Chaos theory, Star wars clone wars, EA Sports NCAA football 2004, The lord of the rings - Return of the King, Counter-Strike. That and the person can deliver which makes things nice.

Good deal. I'd go for it. Xbox should be pretty reliable. Way more than a PS2. Man those are POS! I know 4 or 5 guys whos PS2s range from not playing DVDs to not working at all. Only one of them works, but it sounds like crap and probably will quit any day now.

Beware, my Xbox drive died. It's the only optical drive I've ever lost so I blame it on poor quality.

yeah I think I'm going to get this used one. As long as it lasts me until the XBOX 360 I'll be happy to be honest. I just want to play with something different for a while. How hard is it to replace the CD drive by yourself? Or is that not recommended? I dont have any experience beyond building a computer but would much be needed?

it's a DVD drive and I'm not sure why you would want to replace it unless it fails but the stock one does read DVD-R or at least the revision that I have does - replaced mine (late 2004) after my first one failed-MY FAULT- got a little carried away with tinkering inside of it- STATIC- now I know better and have all the anti-static mats and wristbands I'll ever need - BUT - it is a good idea to go inside it safely and and use a vaccum and compressed air to get reid of the dust build up - My thinking--- It's a computer so treat it like one and and do regular cleaning-

No reason to change DVD Drive if it works - if you ever go inside of it make sure you are grounded!

I got an xbox on release day (i.e. version 1.0 with all the supposed problems!) and its still going strong as ever now 3? years later.

PSU is a bit noisy now at startup but other than that it has been dropped twice I know of, the dog has chewed a corner off it :) and it has been played, sworn at, spilt on and abused by many friends pissedup get together and yet still it works like a charm.

I'd wait until the xbox 360 comes out. There well be plenty of newer Xbox 1's for sale on the cheap

by then I'll have a 360 haha :) this is just something to play with... Will the 360 be backwards compatible? Also anyone know if Madden 2006 will be released for XBOX at all? or are they just going to go straight to the PS3 and 360 versions?

Also got mine shortly after they came out. Mine's modded with a Seagate 80GB drive Xecuter 2 Pro...it's still kickin'! I use that thing almost more than my computer. I watch all the Famliy Guy episodes, Futurama, anime series and stream music to it through the Internet. I don't know why some people complain about durability or things dying. I've played hundreds upon hundreds of DVD movies in there, bring it to many Xbox LAN parties, play Halo for an entire weekend straight! This thing is a rock! Get it, be done with it, and enjoy the hell out of it!

The PSU has no fan and is simple board construction ( SEE PICTURE ) has no case like a standard computer PSU- and is cooled by the exhaust fan sucking air in through the sides (psu is on right side) and expelling it through the rear. There is a small heatsink w/ a ?40mm? fan screwed to the top.

Great Xbox site - mods, parts, and tutorials
